Animated shorts and trailers potpourri

Animated shorts and trailers potpourri: Alexei Petrov's shiny 3D Cags, Aleksandr Petrov's jaw-dropping paint-on-glass Моя Любовь (more), Maximov's Wind Along The Coast, Bakhurin's The White, The Black, Géza Toth's Maestro, Blur's A Gentleman's Duel, Alireza Darvish's What If Spring Does Not Come?, Giersz's classic Koń, Dumala's Sciany, a little Sports et Divertissements (to music of Erik Satie), and a nod to Daniil Kharms (previously) in Herzen and Tolstoy.

The technique used in "Моя Любовь" reminds me of "Mona Lisa Descending a Staircase", which I saw at an Edward Tufte a seminar about ten years ago. What great stuff!

To follow up on that thought: "Mona Lisa Descending a Staircase" was made by Joan Gratz, and can currently be viewed here. It's a little like the "Women in Art" short we discussed recently, in which a similar effect was achieved via morphing to that which Gratz accomplished more astonishingly with clay), winning her the 1992 Oscar for Best Animated Short.

It goes without saying to keep an eye on the "Related Videos" sidebar in the YouTube links.

Mini bonus: One of the greatest animated films of all time, but still not all uploaded. Legyen ennek is Vuk a neve, mint az öregapjának.

Wow, is Моя Любовь available with English subtitles (or even French)? I'd love to see the whole thing, but I don't speak Russian or Japanese.

These are wonderful, Wolfdog - I have only seen a few so far, is YouTube horribly slow today or is it my connection? Either way, grrr.

I love Aexandr Petrov, that clip stunning. There used to be a copy of Rusalka on Google video, that is awesome.

... oops meant to add this: There are samples of Petrov's works at this Russian animation site.

I don't think that an English language track or subtitled version exists yet; I'm pretty sure the film isn't even available on DVD in any form yet. The trailer was a promotion for the theatrical release in Japan which seems to be the only place it's been shown so far (not even in Russia!). In the meantime, you can get your fix watching The Old Man and the Sea (Part 1, Part 2) if you haven't seen that yet.

It's available here in Japan from Buena Vista. It's an NTSC, Region 2 encoded DVD, soundtrack in Russian, subtitled in Japanese (28 minutes). Title in Japanese is 春のめざめ, "Spring Awakening". Here's the order page on the Buena Vista website (Japanese link).

Haven't got time to look at these now but I'm looking forward to them. Thanks for the post!

When I lived in Chicago about 20 years ago, my second wife and I had tickets every year to the animation parts of the Chicago Film Festival. This post brings that feeling and milieu back pretty strongly. Thanks.
