Monitor me! ResearchBuzz points readers towards another insidious tracking mechanism -- the Web Bug. Check Dan Gillmor's ejournal for info on how Lycos -- in tandem with DoubleClick -- has been using this to capture user data.

So I did my taxes yesterday with Quicken's TurboTax for the Web. It was pretty sweet, except for the five minutes it took to download a 0x0 .gif from AvenueA.com at the very beginning. Was this a Web bug? Anyone know anything about AvenueA? I'm doing a story about this, so I'm very curious.

Well Quicken is listed on the Web Bug page as a site using "web bugs". Avenue A seems to be an online marketing company.
