After reading the article, it seemed pretty nice. The one line that caught my eye, however, was from Mr. Andrews describing Ms/ Boyd:

"She's smart, and I knew she could get herself straight," Mr. Andrews said, "so I kept pushing and then I got hooked on her."

I suppose all love is an addiction of sorts to chemicals, but it makes me wonder how much of the relationship is predicated upon replacement therapy: trade the drugs for love.

If it works, I guess the question is moot. Good for them.

Between the "pushing" and the getting "hooked", I'd say Mr. Andrews has used that line before. It's an obvious joke.

Good story. I'll have to check out The Wire.

The new Spike show Kill Point has a few of the Wire's actors playing roles. Omar (Michael K. Williams), Bodie (J.D. Williams), and Brianna Barksdale (Michael Hyatt) are all there, though it's very odd seeing Omar and Ms. Barksdale as cops.

The show isn't remotely close to the Wire in quality but it's not bad and a good way to at least see the actors while the Wire takes its sweet time getting back on the air.

Best of web!

Except of course that HBO syndicates it's shows so the Wire will show up in your part of the world eventually (It is probably already there on DVD and definitely there on bittorrent).

You're precisely the kind of person who needs to hear about the Wire. Because you clearly don't realize how special it is.

The show isn't remotely close to the Wire in quality but it's not bad

Oh, it's bad. Surprisingly bad. I almost wonder if writers were fired in mid-scene. I do enjoy Walhberg's grammar rants though. It feels like a mefi shoutout.

All I want is Omar to make it in the show, goddammit. In a show that is light on protagonists in the first place, Omar's antihero, I think, acts as almost the conscience of the show. Well, except for the stealing, I guess. But he's one of the only people in the show that has honor. Omar and Bunny, man. Love.

Every time I watch The Wire, I get angry at the rest of the stupid shit I cram into my eyeholes whenever that show isn't on. It is the gourmet meal to the rest of television (and this includes crap like The Sopranos, which, while good in comparison with the rest of shit on television, looks like the plot of a 13-year-old's Barbie doll game in comparison with The Wire). The fact that it didn't get nominated for an Emmy for what is undoubtedly the best season of the show so far only shows that the awards are worthless, and that your average television watcher doesn't think it's worth it to have an attention span and actually stick with a show for more than an episode. God. WHY ARE PEOPLE NOT WATCHING THIS FUCKING SHOW? WHY IS IT NOT GETTING THE ATTENTION THE SOPRANOS IS GETTING?!!!!? FUCK YOOOOOU, AMERICA!!!

Sorry. Oh, and my heart has never been more broken than when I saw Michael K. Williams in the fucking trainwreck of Trapped In the Closet. Poor, poor Omar needs to pay his rent, I guess.

mckenney: amen brother.

And for all the rest of you still aching for season five, I third The Corner and highly recommend Homicide: Life on the Street. It was a little known but much loved cop-drama on NBC set in Baltimore and written by many of the same people behind The Wire (David Simon for one).

That show is a amazing and, still to this day, is the only cop-drama I have ever appreciated, probably because it deviates from so many of the genre's boring cliches. Or maybe it's just the writing.

Either way, check it out on DVD.

It does work. Many more people probably recover from addiction via falling in love than do from treatment-- most people who recover actually do so *without* treatment or self-help groups even. Recovery groups and treatment providers try to discourage relationships with the sensible aim of avoiding destructive ones-- but they throw the baby out with the bathwater, basically.

And love-- or at least pair bonding-- does seem to have the same chemical roots as addiction. Basically, in monogamous species, your pleasure system can get "hooked" on a particular partner. In animals that mate once and don't rear offspring together, the pleasure areas are wired simply to connect sex with pleasure, not a particular partner. These pleasure regions exist to motivate us to do biologically sensible things-- not to allow drugs to work, though you would never know that from reading coverage of this area.

The Wire gets more of this stuff right than virtually anything else-- I was psyched to see this story in the Times. Wonder when the book will come out.... (you know there's gotta be a book...)
