Badi Assad has some incredible technique goin' on (YouTube) and charisma to burn. The 41-year-old Brazilian singer and guitarist comes from a musical family and has been signed to a pretty prestigious North-American record label.
Of course these days there is the obligatory Wikipedia entry and her MySpace page. Here's an interview (from ten years ago) wherein she discusses her music. So far as I can see those hips and those lips and those fingertips don't lie. [Much more Badi Assad on YouTube]

Well, she is pretty bad-ass, as indicated in the OP's tags. She's quite an excellent musician, and I really like to see people doing out-of-the-ordinary performance techniques like the mouth percussion and all. I gotta say, though, there's something about her stage persona, her particular brand of theatrics and delivery, that I find overly showy and cloying. That's just my opinion, of course: these kind of gut reactions to a musician's personality are, naturally, very personal.

I've been listening to the Assad brother for 20 years or so. Latin American Music for Two Guitars is an amazing album, two guitars but so tight it sounds like one person and a brilliant translation of a Piazzolla piece that incredibly percussive and melodic.

Seriously, though, I don't think so. There are many, many Brazilian singers and musicians whose performance styles are nothing like this person's. Her stage manner and style of delivery are not inherently "Brazilian", nor are they somehow culturally unique to Brazil. Indeed, her performance style has more in common with, say Canadian Celine Dion (as andihazelwood observed) than with fellow Brazilians like Flora Purim, Gal Costa or Marisa Monte.

She does seem to have gobs and gobs of talent and skill, but it's not my cup of meat, at least not that song. I will look further into her music though.

I hadn't heard about Badi Assad until today, but I have to agree with doctor_negative on the Assad brothers. Their CD of keyboard pieces by Rameau, Scarlatti, Couperin and Bach arranged for two guitars is worth checking out.

I agree that she's a little dramatic, both in terms of physical movement and vocal styling. However, despite that her music is awesome, and she is totally sexy (maybe in a danger Will Robinson train wreck way, but still).

Please do bear in mind you're watching a live performance with close up cameras. She's definitely rocking out with her bad self, but in the performance space distance would mute the element of self-congratulatoryness somewhat.

taste you know... thanks for the post because badi assad is a unique performer. I have to say that I've always found that her music lacks some unity and life of its own. I like a performer who knows to stay behind the music itself, like cristina azuma, for instance, when she plays parazula. Celso Machado, btw, is a great brazilian performer (I think he lives in the Vancouver area now) but also a wonderful composer. His music is so strong that it is just as delightful when it is played by amateurs.

I've enjoyed her album Chameleon for a few years now, but never thought to find video of her playing. Regardless of how she looks while rocking out, she's awesome.
