Is there no humor in public relations? The public relations blog PRBlogNews included a post last week on PR and LSD (a long strange happy tradition). It appears to have been a joke, mixing a selection of early youth-on-acid videos with a vintage discourse about LSD by Dr. Richard Alpert (later Ram Dass) re-imagined as a history of successful "tripvertising." It must have stirred some sort of trouble; there's been a follow-up, "LSD and PR don't mix" post (Don't eat the brown acid) which warns against mixing PR and LSD (and hot dogs).

Ah, well do I remember that little font of wisdom that was "Be Here Now" (the book pictured in the first link). Along with books by Hermann Hesse, Carlos Castaneda, Henry Miller, Robert Heinlein and (yes, I'll admit it) Richard Brautigan, it helped introduce me to some sort of knowledge that the world was more interesting and had far more promise than the dull and predictable suburban reality that surrounded me in my teens. And lemme tell ya, too, acid was a godsend.

And I'm loving me some Fyfe Robertson -- the interviewer in those acid interviews. Who said there were no regional accents on TV in the 1960's?

Who said there were no regional accents on TV in the 1960's?

Certainly not me. There were plenty of 'em back in my home state of Alabama in the 60's. They were drawlin' all over the airwaves! Still maybe today, too, though I'm not altogether sure of that.

that hotdog video is one of the scariest/funniest things I've ever seen. It could have been told as just a funny anecdote but the music makes it so much more.

DERAIL and RANT: Well, now the YouTube videos don't work because someone flagged them as "inappropriate" for all viewers or something. So, you have to log into YouTube to view them. I'm sorry, but if a video is marked inappropriate I'd better see some skin or something. Joking about drug use is not that big a deal and I wish people would stop being so freaked out by sex and drugs and so complacent about violence. This is the reason that Station Agent, which is a wonderful movie that everyone should watch, had a R rating. Oh my god, they smoke pot. I think all of the stoner movies managed to be PG 13 because you never actually "see" them smoking up but its use is promoted through the whole frikken film, but heaven forbid a movie demonstrates normal people casually enjoying drugs in a responsible manner. end of RANT.

I once saw that hot dog video at a Primus show during intermission. There were actually several creepy public service announcements about LSD that basically equated to 'if you take acid you'll go crazy and the terrible things you see will try to eat your face.' Everyone I was at the show with was spun out of their gourds, and we all thought it was hilarious. The kid standing next to us didn't find it so amusing. When the hot dog video came on, he started screaming what sounded like apologies to all the hot dogs he'd ever eaten. I think a Primus show is probably not the greatest place for your first acid trip.
