Cabela's has some weird stuff.

I ordered a shirt online. Now they've sent me a hunting catalog. I guess if you buy a shirt, you might want this, or this, or, most charmingly, this. (This post is not intended to promote any product or activity, nor is any endorsement or non-endorsement of hunting or unusual bathroom decor expressed or implied. Please shop responsibly.)

This post was deleted for the following reason: This is just kind of going really badly. scratch, weird catalog stuff is amusing and whatnot but your presentation was kind a personal-bloggish and the every-second-comment post defense isn't a great idea. -- cortex

Kindly refrain, if you come from a hunting-oriented background, from ridiculing. A whole new world of possibility has bloomed before me.

Wow these guys have some awesome stuff

It's Cabelas. They specialize in outdoor activities, with an emphasis on hunting and fishing. If you want outdoor gear without the hunting/fishing, try REI or something of that sort.

Is this one of those "lol, people into hunting and fishing are gross and the people into them are tacky" posts? Because I've always found going to Cabelas or Bass Pro Shops really entertaining, but not quite worthy of a post.

Having just discovered that a "butt-out tool" is not an aide to help one stop smoking, I have just filed this entire thread under "Too Much Information".

Waaaaayyyyy too much.

C'mon, this sounds cool:

The draw of Cabela's is that its store is built to be an outdoorsman's Disneyland, with an array of special attractions for people to spend the day and a few dollars there.

The East Hartford spot will be an 180,000-square-foot building and have a 30-foot-tall mountain, restaurants, a large aquarium, a shooting gallery, a gun library, and a wide selection of taxidermy displayed.

I've used them in the past. No complaints. They really do have some cool stuff.

Nice blog you got here.

I got this catalogue once too. Presumably LL Bean or Land's End sold me out. Probably LL Bean. Because if I want a cheap, boring button-down dress shirt, I must also need to stock up on shotgun shells.

On the upside, this is almost the exact opposite of consumer profiling. if they knew anything about me, they wouldn't bother sending a hunting catalogue, so I guess my personal information is safe.

(Not that I have any issues with hunting, I just live in downtown Toronto and don't hunt.)

smackfu, I was about to mention that these stores are really worth seeking out, if only for the large amount of taxidermied animals in "natural" scenes. I haven't been to one with an attached shooting range, but I can only imagine how fun that'd be.

Well, duh.

Is this one of those "lol, people into hunting and fishing are gross and the people into them are tacky" posts?

No.

Because I've always found going to Cabelas or Bass Pro Shops really entertaining, but not quite worthy of a post.

Then it's a good thing you didn't post about it, yeah?

My uncle loves Cabela's. He took my great aunt to see the store. He has an awesome photo of her in front of a mounted display of game. Looks like she is about to get trampled by a panicked group of bighorn sheep while mountain goats launch over her shoulder.

I went to the store today and they didn't know what a Portobello mushroom was!

GYOFB.

You suck.

Sigh. LOLRURALS.

What is it with you people? Are we all caffeine-deprived this morning? Firstly, you don't know whether I live in the city or the country. As a point of fact, the only place I've ever seen a dead deer lashed to a pickup is in Brooklyn, New York. And I'm a Mississippian by marriage, too, for what that's worth.

Next time I'll post about, I don't know, some famous person's death.

Shove it up your ass, NDc. Then take it out with a Butt-out tool.

I guess that living in Pennsylvania, you get pretty used to hunting and fishing culture. Places like Cabelas seem unremarkable to me. The first day of doe season is a bigger holiday than the Forth of July here; the public schools all close for the day, even half my professors at CMU canceled classes so that they could go out and hunt.

Personally, I prefer Sportsman's Guide for all my outdoor needs. The Military Surplus section is fantastic. Where else can you buy a Chinese flight suit or a used South African bayonet? The descriptions of the items are also great; I look forward to their catalog even though I rarely buy anything (except a sweet rabbit-fur hat and silk balaclava that got me through some very cold winters and made me look like a complete psycho walking to work).

ItsaMario... a deer is not a "silly animal", they are actually pretty serious most of the time.....

And, if you don't count on MetaFilter to provide a few "anal tools" once in a while, you probably haven't been around here too long!

I wouldn't mind a blog full of crappy hunting gear. Duck decoys that look like pink garden flamingos, camouflage fatigues that offer virtually no camouflage (except in the middle of a happy hardcore rave), fishing lures that look like they're from a cornflake box, stuff like that. Surely the world must be full of bargain hunting and fishing equipment? Any links for me?

Go ahead and delete, mods, if you feel the need. FWIW, I am well aware of what Cabela's is and who their target market is. I was not, however, aware that they sold THESE PARTICULAR PRODUCTS, which made me laugh out loud.
