To give a little background, the ITV Chart Show was exactly that -- an hour-long block of music videos or clips of videos shown on Saturdays around lunchtime. There weren't any 'notable artists on the series' as such: think of it like Top of the Pops without any live performances. To regress into my youth for a moment, I used to hate the indie charts whenever I saw the Chart Show back in the day -- at the time it was mostly Madchester baggy shite that all sounded the same. But I'm sure that in my ignorance I missed a lot of gems -- I imagine the likes of My Bloody Valentine, Ride, Slowdive, etc got a teeny bit of airplay or exposure because of that show. (Which I could confirm by playing some of the YouTube clips so linked, but I'm lazy.)

This is great. I watched the ITV chart show all the time, and never understood what was going on with the indie charts. I was too young to appreciate it then, but now -- sweeeet.

GODDAMN IT. I've only watched for five minutes, and already I'm as pissed off at them "rewinding" past the one I want to watch (and settling for same dreadful MoR shite) as I was when I was 12. The play the good songs for just long enough to make you think it'll happen before "STOP" "REWIND". Teasing fuckers.

hah! some serious nostalgia going down here. the chart show was my hangover recovery cure every saturday morning before i headed out to see the hibs in the afternoon (invariably a fruitless task around this time). i'd forgotten about that daft merry-go-round intro and the inane computer graphic info sound-bytes. it should be noted the chart show was one of the few music shows on british tv at this time--this was in the days prior to jools holland et al, and mtv being widely available.

Ahh the Chart show... I was under the illusion, at the age of 10, that people with the mysterious 'satelite TV' were able to control the fast forward/rewind and actually watch the videos they wanted to watch. It used to make me insanely jealous.

1989 - Bjork is queen of the indie scene 2007 - Bjork is undisputed queen of the indie scene The few interesting things that you got in the indie chart were also in the dance chart at the time. It was always a disappointment to see the horse carousel appear on the screen.
