Hipster Olympics: We're forced to assume that our contestants' participation is strictly ironic.

WOW. Thank god somebody is reading Gothamist and reposting the links here absent the kind of redeeming comment or interesting background that could have made it boring.

Making fun of hipsters is the new hipster thing to do.

Me? I hunt them down, shrink their heads and keep 'em on my keychain. Less talking that way.

The only winning move is not to compete.

Oddly enough, I don't read the Gothamist. And you know, since I don't-- I'm sure other people don't as well... Meaning, well, that this may be the first time someone sees it. And they may find it humorous. Just sayin'.

While the short isn't golden, there's some good stuff in there. Though it seems it may hit a bit too close to home.

SNARKFEST2K7! WOOO! YAY!

This is exactly how I picture all the NYC MetaFilter meet ups.

Fuck all the mean comments. I watched that all the way through and laughed at a lot of it - occasionally even stopping for some self-reflection (uh, I guess I do some of that sometimes). Nice post.

On re-reading the comments, ColdChef does get some points here. As usual.

BRILLIANT.

I particularly like some of the onscreen blurbs...

Good stuff.

Careful with that axe, Eugene, or I'll call up John Zorn and tell him to give you a stern talking-to.

That's one 8-minute joke, all right...

Meh, but this video linked on that page was pretty good. "Gentrification. Get used to it!"

I can't believe I watched 3 whole minutes of it. It's entertaining for about one minute...

Not completely successful, but way better than any of that CollegeHumor swill. I laughed at the hypsterz enjoying a bump of nose candy and the prominent sponsorship of Pitchfork and Vice.

Kids these days. I tell you what. /Hank Hill

This probably would have been funny to me 20 years ago when I actually gave a damn.

See, if you live long enough, ennui and cynicism become reflexive, not just a pose.

Authenticity is just a bald spot away.

This is totally a rip-off of the Upper Class Twit of the Year competition from the Pythons. But it's still cute.

"Adolf Hipster" would make an awesome sitcom; that shit will write itself. I'll have my people call your people.

Irony is not the new stupid, it's the old stupid, which is not stupid fresh but just stupid as in dumb as in dull. Duh.

Teh new stupid says get with the program. Irony is so dead is doesn't even have a definition anymore. It's beyond Norrised. It wasn't ever Norrisable in the first place.

Which says a lot.

Irony. [crickets chirping]. Get it?

Yea, it's a pity they didn't acknowledge the clear debt to Monty Python in the credits or something. I mean, not like I cared enough to watch it all the way to the credits, huh?

At least 10 of my friends are represented by the 4 contestants.

I need new friends.

What the fuck is a hipster?

The article is only so-so, but the comments pretty much complete the picture.

Judging by some of the whining, some of our very own Mefis probably just missed qualifying to compete. I suppose this thread is the Mefi version of Judgement Day:
Tafoya: Just brimming with hatred.
Berman: And it looks like . . . He officially feels bad about himself.
and FTW: "She's known to spread her legs for anyone with a fauxhawk and an eating disorder."

I think it's a nice find. Thanks.

I'm surprised how many here could take the time to criticize for the relation to Python, but couldn't be bothered to read the sidebar on the youtube page where they admit openly that it's an intentional rip-off. Perhaps too much of a hipster to hit the "more" button?

Annoying Hipster Douchbag was funny.
"...can ask your head-band some questions?"

The Hipster olympics though, the sad part is it took me a couple minutes to realize this was 'parody,' those people, they really live there. I mean, walking down Bedford you would see just those people, and you would not think twice about it - so it really seemed more just an observation piece...

I hate everything.

Actually, I really liked "Sick American Bastards" guy. I think I worked with him once replacing a sewer line. Seriously.

she'll spread here legs for anyone with a faux hawk and an eating disorder!

I was once at a show talking about Morrissey with this Korean girl from London and she really couldn't care less until this too tall hipster with an out of control white boy afro greases up on her, and she dances away into his eternal in-joke. At that point hipster tribalism seemed no different than a fraternity, and no matter who spreads I'm not wearing a fucking trucker cap.

Or, as jacalata already snarked (one point to jacalata), maybe watch all the way to the end, where they explicitly state that fact in the video itself.

"Adolf Hipster" would make an awesome sitcom;

Actually that describes a major part of the original film The Producers. A part that was discarded for the stage version, to its great cost, in my opinion.

Not that he was a hipster in the current sense mind you, but the term would have been understood to apply to him at the time.
