Facebook Slow to Shut Down Group: Fuck Islam
September 2, 2007 4:19 PM   Subscribe

Facebook Group Fuck Islam has been up and running since August 15th. How long does it take to filter out profanity let alone groups promoting intolerance? Despite the formation of the opposing group "petition: if "f**k Islam" is not shut down..we r quitting facebook", the initial group remains in place. Facebook prohibits profanity in profile names ... is this an example of slow enforcement of existing Website policies or is it simply a great argument for corporations to use object oriented coding practices and inheritance?

This post was deleted for the following reason: Yeah, we don't really need to use the front page to try and shame Facebook, and it doesn't seem like this post is good for anything else. -- cortex

Too bad you can't see any of this if you don't have a facebook login.

A group is not a profile. I don't see why that rule would apply.

My vote is for "tempest in a teapot."

Type "fuck" in the search in Facebook. There's over 500 groups (facebook doesn't count above that.) The policy you linked to refers to profile names, but Fuck Islam isn't a profile. It's a group.

There's a lot of offensive Facebook groups. My guess is that Facebook doesn't take them down unless they're slanderous or attracting bad publicity to the site.

ALongDecember, I guess this is one step towards bad publicity... :)

Mek, it certainly is a bit more MySpacey than the image Facebook likes to project.

Facebook has inspired me to discover (and by proxy, reveal) new layers of pointlessness in my life. But it has certainly improved my ability to stalk people.
