Belgium v. Scientology

Scientologyfilter. At the end of a 10 year investigation into the activities of Scientology in Belgium, Federal prosecutors are getting ready for a trial. The Belgian Church of Scientology and the European office of Scientology (which has its seat in Brussels) are to stand trial for a long list of crimes, including criminal organisation, extortion, fraud and illegal practice of medicine. The trial promises to be an important test-case for the position of Scientology in Europe. (iht article, la libre article (french))

This post was deleted for the following reason: Seems like this isn't really news so much as a sign that maybe there will be news some time in the future if the trial ever happens. There's not really much post here right now. -- cortex

are getting ready for a trial .... are to stand trial for a long list of crimes

It's not even certain whether or not this will go to trial. The prosecutor is pushing for such, but an administrative hearing will determine if it proceeds.

"A Belgian prosecutor on Tuesday recommended that the U.S.-based Church of Scientology stand trial for fraud and extortion....investigating prosecutor Jean-Claude Van Espen, who said that up to 12 unnamed people should face charges....An administrative court will decide whether to press charges against the Scientologists."

If a conviction against Scientology is secured, hopefully they'll go after the Catholic Church next, followed by Judaism, Islam, etc, etc.

Freedom in our lifetime!

Are Belgian prosecutors like the French ones? More detective than attorney?
