Wow. As kids we would frequent our local storm sewer system, but that meant crawling for hundreds of feet though 3 foot diameter pipes until you reached my junction room with all the Steve McQueen posters and Playboy centerfolds taped to the walls. You didn't want to get caught in there during a thunderburst though, that might have been something close to certain death.

considering how fastidiously spotless the Japanese are Well, only certain parts of their cities could be considered "spotless", but if you travel around Tokyo you'll see lots of garbage piled up, litter, grafitti, etc. They didn't get a modern sewage (human waste) system until well after the conclusion of WWII. Though they have made strides since then, what with the fancy toilets as standard equipment in many places. But if you want fastidious, check out the Singaporeans.

See, with the little storm sewers in New York, we may get some alligators. But these ones pictured here are clearly a perfect breeding ground for much much larger reptiles. No wonder they fear Godzilla.
