The Bammer is absolutely 1000% awesome.

I reccomend this episode of the "Never Not Funny" podcast on which she is a guest. (Here's a direct MP3 link if you prefer.)

She's really one of the funniest comics around.

Big Maria Bamford fan here. My first exposure to her brilliance was this excellent interview from Morning Sedition [MP3].

That was the first time that I have ever been exposed to her. I liked her. Funny. I like that she seemed totally unafraid to appear cheesy and corny and hokey and whatnot. Too many comedians these days are too busy trying to be a cool guy to make anyone laugh. Even when they are telling jokes about liking Star Trek they are still trying to be cool. Not her. She embraced total dorkiness without reservation. I like that. Thanks.

Does she do the voice for that cartoon cat who talks about politics? The cat who asks rhetorical questions and asnswer them "Well... "?

Anyways this is good. While at super deluxe visit baby cakes.

She is great. And, a super live performer. Her impressions of her family just kill me, and you'd think since she's such a good mimic she would pick a different voice as their natural voice. Great post.

I stumbled on her standup late one night taking a stab at Comedy Central. She is the funny.

Praise? PRAISE? What have you all done with the real Metafilter?

Yay! Comedians of Comedy will rise!

Been watching this for a bit. I'm happy it was posted to the blue. Thanks sluggy.

Yay, Maria! I was just watching her on the Comedians of Comedy Tour DVD earlier today. She is also fantastic on Tim and Eric, Awesome Show, Great Job!

Is anyone else really, really, really reminded of zefrank? Same expressions, same mannerisms, same voices...
posted by TheNewWazoo at 7:54 PM on September 6, 2007

I like her stuff, actually I REALLY like her stuff, but she's had the same material since I first saw her in 1998 or something.

Having said that, the last link really is new and different. It's very good, and it sucks that there's really no venue for it.

Whatever happened to the network variety show, anyway? Would people REALLY rather watch someone eat a scorpion on a hoagie bun than a little song and dance routine?

Really?

No traditional venue, I should say.

Since I've been on her mailing list, she has not toured Michigan.

Can any of my Detroit-area peeps give a shout out for her to come her?
posted by McLir at 8:08 PM on September 6, 2007

She's very funny. The third link was like Sarah Silverman, lite.

Maria's an original. Totally brilliant. There's also some good footage of her stand-up on Patton Oswalt's "Comedians of Comedy" documentary.

I've heard the material in the first video dozens of times now, but the other two were good stuff. Thanks for the links.

I...I...have nothing at all bad to say about this. Uniformly excellent. She really is very, very good. Thanks!

My only beef is that I'm getting a really choppy download on my mac. Content-wise, this is some good stuff. Her cutter/former schoolmate from the first link is still giving me some chills. Wow.

Didn't we just have a post about how we're drowning in quirk?

Hang out on the dark fringe. That's were the real cool kids are anyway.

She's nuthin special, and she is a little over the top with the enunciation and facial expressions on the tight camera angles.

Besides, I'm too old for quirky.

Uhm... w/r/t Maria and Ze Frank... no. Both are make web video using tight camera shots, but much of Maria's show is adapted from her standup... material she's been doing for years. I know Maria a bit, and I am 100% confident she has no idea who Ze Frank is. (Nothing against Ze, btw)
posted by YoungAmerican at 8:12 AM on September 7, 2007

Maria is starring in a FOX late night pilot, which features a lot of other really great people, and it's taping next week. There may still be some (free) tickets available, instructions are here.

Ugh. No. Obviously, taste is subjective, especially in comedy, but not for me at all. The dark song was painfully bad. I don't like Patton Oswalt either, so maybe I'm just different.

I can see the stylistic similarities, but she's nowhere near as funny as Ze Frank, imo. More dorky, less clever.
