But this was before the age of the Internet and the age of emo, so I didn't have any real opportunity to humiliate myself outside a very limited circle of acquaintances, teachers, and high school counselors. In retrospect, I'm glad.

Sure, he's a bit dramatic, but so are most teenagers. And he's certainly no more self-absorbed than most bloggers, just a bit young, but also without comfortable place for his true self to exist; he should probably try to move. He'll learn lessons along the way, most likely. He'll be fine. He may even one day be as serious-minded and full of existential angst as you. One can hope, right?
