Apparently Jack Nicholson was considered for the role of Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs. That makes a lot of sense to me but I am glad he didn't end up taking the role. Other considered actors were: John Hurt, Christopher Lloyd, Patrick Stewart, Louis Gosset Jr., Robert Duvall and Robert De Niro. Imagining De Niro as "Hannibal the Cannibal" just doesn't cut it. I bet Patrick Stewart would have been almost perfect. This was before Picard. Such trivia is always suspect, of course, but the cinematic thought experiments can run wild in your mind if you let them... Robert De Niro as...

I found it interesting that perhaps Patrick Stewart could have gotten this role, since--being before Picard, as indicated in the post--perhaps he would have been too successful to have accepted the role in Star Trek....but then I thought, 'that doesn't sound right,' and sure enough:
