Count me as one of those people who still finds LOLcats amusing (sorry). I haven't found previous mashups too funny, but a few here cracked me up. So thanks for this post. This is my fave.

actually, wfc, that one truly is brilliant, i thought--it immediately hits people, and immediately reminded me of all those studies done with kids where they all always pick the white doll as being prettier (and also of self-loathing in general, as we have seen in the Craig stuff and other closetcase things, etc) -- and some of the truest things are said in jest.

I, too, think these are very funny, and I think a big part of the appeal comes from the fact that these are a lot closer in spirit to the original LOLcats that most of us were first exposed to, and not the more recent denigrations of the form. When I was reading these, and found myself chuckling at more than a few of them, I thought "Finally, LOLcats are weird again..."

The reason I liked the LOLcats at first, when I was first forwarded a huge email full of ceiling cat and I'm in yr whatever, is that I really barely understood them and they seemed like a random bit of humor. I'm not normally a big fan of the Fignuts school of absurdist comedy, but the early ones I saw made almost no sense, and that was part of what was funny about them.

The downfall, of course, was the inevitable: the fad was discovered by the mediocre, the wannabes, the bandwagon jumpers, and none of these Lollers Come Lately got the point.

Instead, I Can Has Cheesburger has turned into just misspelled cutesy-pie baby talk, which isn't at all what was so attractive to the original fans of the first LOLcats. (Plus, they don't even get the misspellings right.) At a certain point the site has become indistinguishable from Cute Overload, when just a few months ago it was as diametrically opposed to it as you could be while still featuring pictures of kittens.

I think the inevitable end of the LOLcats is right around the corner, when the phenomenon will have truly come full circle: I Can Has Cheezburger will post a picture of a kitty hanging from a tree limb with the unironic caption "Hang N Der"...

Well said, Ian A.T. I hadn't thought of lolcats as absurdist humor before, but that is a damn near perfect description of the form when it's at it's operating at it's best.

I think the whole 'invisible X' meme plays into this nicely.
