There are a load of these sites that have been popping up over the last year. This is the first time I've seen this one, but it essentially does the same as the others.

The problem is, sites like this very quickly have their bandwidth flooded with all the massive files people are uploading to them, and quickly run out of resources to to the highly CPU-intensive re-encoding of video. They quickly slow to a crawl.

Then another new site, like this, comes along, and we can all hammer that for a few weeks until it dies as well.

Also, what does it actually mean to convert an file to an "AVI", exactly? AVI's just a container format - I'm waiting to see what sort of video it decides to put in there.

I uploaded my screenplay and selected to download an AVI file but it didn't seem to work. It downloaded "The ISland of Dr Moreau" instead.

Well, to be fair, a quad-core costs about the same as a single-core processor cost a few years ago and video transcoding is probably the most easily parallelizable app out there. Plus you could, in theory, choke video uploads to limit the upload rate to the transcoding rate so that you're never technically backlogged.

But yeah, it's like offering a free house moving service and then getting called by a gravel quarry.

Gee, the moment I uploaded the MeFi logo there were no longer any vector graphics options available. Imagine that.

But... but... I don't want to.

There is only one thing I want to do right now and it involves a martini.

Damn, it doesn't seem to load for me. And here I have this MS Publisher file that I'd love to convert into, well, anything that doesn't suck

I tried to convert my job to one that pays 54 times as much and requires me to fly first class between London, San Francisco, and Denpasar. No dice. Bad site.

miss lynnster: convert "units" will do it for you:

1 ounce [US, liquid] = 6 Teaspoon [US]

29 miles/gallon(US) = 2900 gallons(US)/100 miles

That doesn’t seem right…

The word "you" I know. The word "tit" I know. But that word in the middle, "conver," that's a new one.

You know...google does this already.

Just type in (for example) "3 ounces in grams", and google spits out: 3 ounces = 85.0485694 grams. I use it all the time when I'm converting formulas to/from metric. It's fabulous.
