TED presentation: "Filmmaker Deborah Scranton talks about and shows clips from her documentary The War Tapes, which put cameras in the hands of Charlie Company, a unit of the National Guard, for one year in Iraq. The soldiers' raw footage and diary excerpts tell a powerful, unsettling story of modern war.

That part toward the end made no sense. Killing a child who gets too close when you're throwing candy out of the back of your truck? Did he mean he intentionally killed the kid for getting too close, or he accidentally ran over the kid? Because there's a huge difference.

Camp Anaconda is a funny name. It reminds me of Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom where the old guy, Marlon Perkins, would always send the young guy into the pond to wrestle with the giant snake while he stood aside giving the narration.

Yeah. Marlon Perkins singing "my anaconda don't want none unless she got some buns."

It's weird to me that there have been so few comments on this thread. Sort of lends credence to her thoughts on our sociological neglect of the war. How strange is it that our country is in a war that we started and days can go by (for me, at least) without one having an honest and complete thought about it?

I know we're all sick of hearing about it, but seriously. We fucked up a whole country (at least) and seldom even bother to comprehend it.

It's weird to me that there have been so few comments on this thread.

Srsly. This thread creeps me out. I was just starting to think, "I bet there are links to VA hotlines, charities, etc. in the mefi thread!" at the end of the video and I came here to find instead:

Did he mean he intentionally killed the kid for getting too close, or he accidentally ran over the kid?

Dude! obviously it was an accident. Watch it again and listen to how she introduces her conversation with him. :(

I'm really going to have to get involved locally. I think I may start with supporting the GI Rights Hotline since I'm already involved with my local Friends meeting and am a conscientious objector. Additionally there's a VA Hospital locally, and I have a friend who actually works there, so perhaps I can volunteer once a month. Since it looks like the veterans charities don't deliver a good bang for the buck, I'm probably going to stick to that.

Don't fall victim to Genovese Syndrome! Get involved!
