Totally, massively, obsessively nerdy. And yes, a good part of me is jealous. Several years ago, after my divorce, I took all of my Star Wars toys and shipped them off to my brother's house where my niece and nephews gleefully tore them out of the packaging and promptly started losing all the little accessory bits. I didn't wince one bit. I gave up my burgeoning collection but I made Uncle of the Year. Besides, I kept all my Lego and comic books...

Whenever I see sites like this that list entire Star Wars figure lines, I always get so furious with LucasArts for how blatant they are making figures exclusively for obsessive-compulsive collectors. The New Hope movie line has two different generic "Imperial Officers." Was that particular "character" on any kid's Christmas list? I'm amazed they didn't go whole hog and make figures of the production crew. "Oh, wow! 3rd Assistant, with Grip Action!"

The New Hope movie line has two different generic "Imperial Officers." Was that particular "character" on any kid's Christmas list? If you wanted to really shoot your way out of a Death Star playset then yes, yes it was.

Or, to put it another way: back when the original action figures first came out, every kid I knew (myself included) owned half a dozen generic stormtroopers. At least. Why? Why would anyone want six of the same figure? Because you can't fucking recreate scenes from the movie with one stormtrooper that you don't even take out of the box. Wanting ever single character from the movie in your playset existed long before those "Gem Mint 10" dipshits showed up.

The one good thing about having some of the really shitty Star Wars figures - like that robot that looked like a dehumidifier with legs - is that you could use them in battles where stuff actually got blasted apart (i.e. you could break them without feeling bad about it or missing them).

The most fun I ever had with my old Kenner Star Wars toys was tying the action figures to rockets and launching them (Luke flew the farthest) and setting some of the vehicles on fire. Oh to be young and bored have access to matches and gasoline.

Wait. Whoa, whoa, whoa... People, we're missing the important thing here. But should I be a fanboy (A) , or snark (B)? Choose a path: A) Holy moly, they're making action figures out of McQuarrie's concept art. Storm troopers with lightsabers? Concept art Luke Skywalker, C-3PO, and RD-D2. Great googly moogly, why didn't someone tell me that such toys existed? Or at least tell me back in 1997 to hold onto my youthful enthusiasm for all things Star Wars? I adored my book of A New Hope concept sketches. And now they are in 3-D. AWESOME JAWESOME. Go to paragraph four. B) Holy moly, they're making action figures out of McQuarrie's concept art? Looks like Lucas is trying to milk it for all it's worth. I'm surprised it's taken 'til 2007, though. I wonder when they're going to come out with toys based on the prequel artwork. Its like the opposite of digitally remastering or something. Go to paragraph four. Well, I really do like the fact that he made pixel pictures for all his action figures. I can't help but think it'd be awesome if there were some internet games made from them in the style of pixeljam. Hey, pixeljam, its autumn already, when're you going to come out with those new games?

I showed this to my roommate, and as we stared in awe as character after character slowly loaded I said, "This guy is a dork, that's all there is to it." My roommae turned to me and said, "Well, in his defense, this is the sorta thing you do at work."

It looks exactly like a graphics character set for a Star Wars Roguelike. I won't be even slightly surprised if someone ends up using it for exactly that. (Serious players will of course stick with text mode. If you can't figure out what a green lower-case "y" is, you probably won't last long in the game anyway.)
