I mean this in all seriousness, but does anyone even care about making music videos today? Besides the occasional BET & CMT countdown, I honestly can't remember the last music video I saw on TV. Granted my other options are MTV and VH1 with basic cable, but they don't show anything. Really, are music videos relevant anymore??

Good question, Falconetti. What on Earth is so outrageous about Michael Jackson's "Thriller" or "Black or White" (unless it's the extended car-smashing version, but still...)? What about Queen dressing in drag for "I Want to Break Free"? Supposedly this is the video that quashed their popularity in the US for many years.

They got both the Marilyn Manson videos they needed (I didn't think "Heart-Shaped Glasses" would get in because it's so recent, serious props for not being dissuaded by how new it is), as well as the Tool and Prodigy. A little more than NIN than necessary. I can't speak for any of the 80s stuff, but the 90s/00s coverage is pretty much perfect.

I suppose that might be true, but to me that song always represented the worst of Queen, along with "Radio Ga-Ga" on the same album, like a stale stab at the '80s sound (and they were far from the only band to fall victim to that sucky trend).

Glad to see the Replacements, and really, that fatboy slim video deserves it. Having grown from my late teens on with music videos, I think the whole Micheal Jackson thing is what killed music videos. He's the one that started the whole need a director thing for videos. The ones I really love are just a band doing their thing and being creative. FGTH brings back memories, and really, Body Double was just an extended version of their music video.

What was the creepy film clip, it had the dude from radiohead singing, and this obviously homeless guy was wandering along, talking to himself and punching the air, and he kept getting hit by cars. That creeped me out, seriously (the Aphex Twin one did too).

My dad had MTV when it first started, and I remember seeing "Whip It" quite regularly. It never struck me as particularly provocative (having grown up on a steady diet of adventure stories and Indiana Jones and other things where whips were used to tame lions and perform circus tricks and saving yourself from crumbling South American temples, and, besides, the song wasn't about actual whippings...), until one evening when I was around 13. We had spent the weekend at my dad's house, and watched his collection of Devo videos. If anything particularly disturbed me about them, it was when Booji Boy's head got crushed in the press, but even that wasn't that awful. However, my mother pulled me into the kitchen, looked at me firmly and said "Your sister's been telling me about stuff you've been watching at your dad's." We had been watching a lot of TV. "Yeah?" "Yeah. Something about a lady having her clothes whipped off?" "Oh, yeah, the Devo videos." "And was that what happened?" "Yeah, but it wasn't, like, dirty or anything..." So now I see "Whip It" listed as an "outrageous" music video, and I'm twelve all over again, convincing my mother.

This list is terrible. It's like the work of someone who listened to music in the 80s and only braved the modern music world a couple of times since then... kind of like Rolling Stone, I guess. jmd82 makes a great point, although indirectly: Nobody watches music videos any more, but it's because they're not played any where (except the internet). Which is a shame, because it's one of the more effective, inventive and emotional art forms around.
