When Conrad O. Johnson heard Otis Redding in concert in the year 1967, he was inspired to bring the kind of explosive energy he felt from that performance to the high school band he was charged with leading. He wanted to lead not only the best high school stage band in Texas, but the best high school stage band in the world. And with the Kashmere Stage Band, it's arguable that that's exactly what he did. (why is it that every club I encounter in the chubu region which describes itself as "funky" just ends up being another lame translation of hip hop? Gifu needs soul.)

I kiss you for this, flapjax at midnite. I love Otis Redding so much - such a sexy, handsome dude and commensurate soul man. He is right up there in my pantheon of groupie fantasies. Here are a few of my faves - Try a Little Tenderness, Loving You For Too Long and not a live performance but so worth a listen A Change Is Gonna Come - omg! He and Professor Longhair are two performers I really regret not having seen live.

Man, I thought my high school band in Houston was the best in town in 1969. We'd never even heard of these guys. Our loss. Although I did play in a pretty wicked polka band in the Heights on weekends.

The Plant/Krauss thing works surprisingly well. Then again, she could harmonize with a jackhammer and make it sound good.
