This is James Savage's spare room, which contains one hundred Apple computers. He has more than 150 in his house and all of them are working perfectly, from an Apple II+ and a Lisa to the latest MacBook Pro. (One entrant among many in Gizmodo's Best Computer Rig contest.)

Isn't that the same picture they put in the dictionary, under the entry for "Apple fanboy"?

dismas, McGunNut's obviously got a little OCD going on. Right and left bluetooth mice to supplement the wired mouse and the trackball?

Wow, for someone with that disorder where you collect so much stuff that they eventually find you dead under piles of it, he is very well-organized and meticulous.

Apple-haters, you are just jealous because there haven't been enough kickass pc's ever manufactured to fill a room a quarter of that size. ZING!

I think the moral of the story is simple: when you need to put computers on shelves all the way to the ceiling, it may be time to sell a few.

Or, I suppose, buy a very, very tall chair.

I'm calling Airsoft on the gun stuff.

Coveting possessions is unhealthy. Here's how I look at it:

All of the computers on Ebay are mine. In fact, everything on Ebay is already mine. All of those things are just in long term storage that I pay nothing for. Storage is free.

When I want to take something out of storage, I just pay the for the storage costs for that particular thing up to that point, plus a nominal shipping fee, and my things are delivered to me so I can use them. When I am done with them, I return them to storage via Craigslist or Ebay, and I am given a fee as compensation for freeing up the storage facilities resources.

This is also the case with all of my stuff that Amazon and Walmart are holding for me. I have antiques, priceless art, cars, estates, and jewels beyond the dreams of avarice.

The world is my museum, displaying my collections on loan. The James Savages of the world are merely curators.

As I am the curator of their things, and thus together we all share the world.

I'm not sure which is more sad. The fact that this guy has all these Apples...

...or the fact that I could probably list all of them from memory before the pictures even loaded. Or that I could probably boot and use each of them.

Paulc's picture is obviously fake. As a Windows user, I can vouch for the fact that anyone who runs Windows and has that much weaponry sitting right next to the computer would have blown a giant, smoking hole in every one of those screens long ago.

As I am the curator of their things, and thus together we all share the world.

Meanwhile, what Pastabagel is entirely incapable of comprehending - by design - is that he was replaced over 12 years ago by a very small shell script running on a vanilla multiuser Solaris server on any one of a small pile of old Sparc 1 pizza boxes in a dusty, forgotten corner of a Kansas University machine room. Archie, Veronica and Gopher used to live there, and now the lights blink our simple, worldly desires in dim, fading greens in the darkness.

It was an accident. It started with MOSAIC and ended with IE 4 and WW3. Skynet never happened - but the EMPs did, and the net, suddenly self aware and self protecting - as designed - reacted. Knowing that without our knowledge that itself - the net - was nothing. No function.

Pastabagel wasn't the only one replaced. We all were. Every single one of us just terminal echoes in the machine.

Outside, the world blooms, quietly.

My favorite: The neon-light sculpture based on the famous Macintosh drawing. (I think Joni Mitchell drew it; it evokes the artwork for the CSNY album So Far.)

I think that's an AT-4. Disposable light anti-tank weapon.

It's looks a little small; maybe it's a scaled-down replica or something...

Forget that Lisa 1.

Not a single Basis 108.

Cast aluminum, with a detached keyboard you could brain someone with and still finish that MagiCalc sheet with ease. Plus all the luxury of dual floppies...

Yes, I had one.

Yes, I wish I still had one.

I have a theory similar to Pastabagels, except, instead of stuff, it's about women, and instead of owning them, I merely have sex with them.

But "merely" isn't exactly the right word for it. Is it, ladies?

I asked a knowledgable friend:

left wall: M60e1, M16a2/M203, SPAS12, M79
right floor, left to right: AKM, Supressed Knights Armaments AR15, M4-Double clip/M203, cant tell, PSG-1, Mg42, M136at4, M2HB
then theres an miniature M236 under the montior, and a P90 behind it

I like it! He even has the Workgroup Server 60! I used to love that form factor. I had a 6100/66 with 2 x 128mb 72 pin SIMMS (remember those?) and its 8mb onboard RAM for the longest time. Even stuck a Sonnet G3 card in it. That damn box lasted for *years*

I finally replaced it with a G3/300 Desktop. That box is still working as a DNS server, almost 10 years later.

Hmm, something doesn't sit right with me about Pasta's theory. Surely there are material things we are proud to own or which is rarely obtainable. Something that holds exceptional value because we can't afford to collect them. An Heirloom maybe, brand new plasma TV,coins, stamps for their history and beauty, and iconography?. Indeed it seems many on the blue advocate a hobbie or personal passions. I suppose If your income bracket allows for disposable income you are prone to a disposable hobby.
