Breakfast looks different to different people. That alone made me wanna post this cuz that's just hella cool, but after I saw that, I started wondering what does breakfast sound like? Why should we even bother with breakfast? Here's some more thoughts on breakfast. Hungry yet? This was a great movie by the way. I guess that one was okay too. So what did you have for breakfast? [previously]

Beautifully presented, but I would have found it a more interesting project if there were a bit more age, race, and demographic disparity.

At the risk of indulging in chatfilter, I have two breakfasts. In the warmer 6 months it's Stonyfield yogurt (key lime, lemon, raspberry, or chocolate) with 1/2 cup Kashi cereal. In winter it's 2 slices low carb whole wheat toast with 1 T peanut butter and slices of banana.

I question the truthfulness of this due to the dominance of healthy foodstuffs. I know that most of the time I do a pot of tea with either a banana or toast with peanut butter and jam. But many are the days when I go full out with two eggs over easy, hash browns, sourdough toast (with butter thank you very much) as well as chicken fried steak and gravy at the local diner. Admittedly, I saw a burrito and what looked to be a greasy scramble on a tortilla, but I do think the subjects skewed towards what they wanted to eat for breakfast rather than what they really ate.

No matter what I have for breakfast, I always make sure to wash it all down with a tall, refreshing glass of Minute Maid orange juice. Ahhh: Now that's affordable!

Yes, the presentation is beautiful. Everyone's breakfast and everyone's china looks like it could be in a museum. And for this I actually did enjoy the link. But does she only know middle class hippie New Yorkers? I feel like there was so much that could have been done; people eat all sorts of different types of breakfast: cold noodle soup, quesadillas, fish stew with ground manioc. The choices are almost endless. And yet the most diverse things here seemed to be fruit in cereal, sausage gravy on biscuits, a convenience store burritos.

I really like the breakfast blog, though. True food porn there. I think I'll have to make some eggs benedict this weekend.

I agree with ranchocalamari - it's doubtful. Either some of 'em are putting the best face on things, or the survey pool was just the yoga-taking green-tea-drinking hipster friends of the photographer. I scrolled through looking for a nice bacon'n'egg mess with a couple hefty slices of toast with butter and jam, to no avail. Also, an honest portrait would include some empty plates for the breakfast skippers, plus a preponderance of Clif and Luna bars, and some serious Dunkin Donuts Croissanwiches, muffins, and donuts.

I'm usually not a breakfast eater, unless copious amounts of coffee count as breakfast. But I love breakfast suppers. A plate of sausage, eggs, hashbrowns and pancakes is great comfort food.

I ate a banana and a hard-steamed (they taste slightly better when you steam them instead of boiling them) egg white (I'm not trying to cut my cholesterol, I just don't really like egg yolks), which is pretty much par for the course. If we're out of bananas and/or eggs, I might eat a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

I'm not quite sure why I feel this is interesting, but I'm compelled to comment anyway.

Agree with miko about demographic diversity. I was surprised - and surprised that I was surprised - when I realized my Chinese-Singaporean officemates ate char kway teow for breakfast.

My own preference for a fried rice/marinated fried pork/eggs-over-easy combination, or chocolate rice porridge sprinkled with bits of dried salted fish, would probably have them making faces, too.

And please do the ChatFilter thing. That's the point here. What's your breakfast like? This is my thread. I encourage chatfilter and derailing. I think it's fun! =) My breakfast is usually a bowl of store brand honey nut frosted oats in faux moo. Occasionally with a banana. Then on the way to work if I have time, I stop by Whataburger and grab a chicken sandwich. I call that second breakfast.

I haven't been eating breakfast recently. It goes along with the feeling of stagnancy I've had over the past few weeks, I think. Over the long weekend -- five days! -- I got up so late every day that I had to hurry to even eat lunch at a reasonable hour.

But I was in a breakfast mood today, so I wandered out in the early afternoon rain, still wearing my pajamas, and brought back an egg and cheese sandwich at Dunkin' Donuts. It's remarkable how much better I can feel after eating breakfast.

Tomorrow I'll be up early.

I found myself upset that more people weren't enjoying and eggs, bacon, oatmeal/malt-o-meal, pancakes, juice, milk, and coffee combination. Not one at a time, but all together. That is my ideal breakfast. Perhaps its a mash up of my whole family, though I started drinking coffee young, but it reminds me of all sorts of wonderful smells. Looking at these pictures, it made me sad that so many other people just have coffee or fruit or toast or some incredibly low calorie thing. I wanted the real world to be full of the deliciousness of my youth. Lots of different stuff piled high that you didn't know if you could eat it all but somehow you could. Unfortunately, the photo set appears just to be a reflection of college breakfast eating habits, my mid twenties, and lack of time. When you start eating reality is when you realize things are getting dull.

I should go to my old favorite morning hangout again. I haven't been to Cafe Brazil in years but they have the best omelettes, and their French toast with fruit was more of a dessert than a breakfast. My fave meal of theirs was the Brazilian Breakfast: Two Farm Fresh Eggs, a Chorizo Empanada topped with Spicy Cream Sauce, Cheddar Cheese and a Jalapeno, served with Rosemary Potatoes and Grilled Homemade White Bread... woah. It's $7.99 now. Okay. Now I remember why I stopped going.

I've gone weeks before, eating nothing but PB&J and vitamin supplements.

Did the woman who looked like she was on meth have a cold yam on that plate? Eegah.

Today for breakfast I had en entire pound of Johnsonville maple flavoured pork breakfast sausages, cooked and then chopped up in three quarters of a pound of shredded hash browns with three eggs poured on top and cooked through, then drenched liberally with green chili sauce. Because it was my day off. Yeah, I felt gross all day. No, never again.

Hunter S. Thompson on breakfast:

Breakfast is the only meal of the day that I tend to view with the same kind of traditionalized reverence that most people associate with Lunch and Dinner. I like to eat breakfast alone, and almost never before noon; anybody with a terminally jangled lifestyle needs at least one psychic anchor every twenty-four hours, and mine is breakfast. In Hong Kong, Dallas or at home — and regardless of whether or not I have been to bed — breakfast is a personal ritual that can only be properly observed alone, and in a spirit of genuine excess. The food factor should always be massive: four Bloody Marys, two grapefruits, a pot of coffee, Rangoon crepes, a half-pound of either sausage, bacon, or corned beef hash with diced chiles, a Spanish omelette or eggs Benedict, a quart of milk, a chopped lemon for random seasoning, and something like a slice of Key lime pie, two margaritas, and six lines of the best cocaine for dessert.... Right, and there should also be two or three newspapers, all mail and messages, a telephone, a notebook for planning the next twenty-four hours and at least one source of good music.... All of which should be dealt with outside, in the warmth of a hot sun, and preferably stone naked.

Personally, I could probably stand to eat breakfast more often, and eat better stuff when I do eat it. I had a pear for breakfast today, and cinnamon toast with peanut butter two days before. I should probably treat myself to bacon and eggs at some point in the near future.

Breakfast is my favourite meal. Here are some things I like for breakfast, in no particular order, and usually in combination with other things from the list:

Eggs (fried or poached, occasionally scrambled or boiled)
Bacon
Sausage (especially pork chipolatas)
Baked beans (preferably home made, in a sweet-and-spicy sauce)
Cheese
Black pudding
White pudding
Pancakes (preferably with bacon and maple syrup)
Hash browns
Fried potato slices
Corn fritters
Fried onion
Grapefruit
Toast
Tortillas
Cold pizza (ideally with jalapenos)

But usually I just skip it.

Breakfast for me is a insanely quiet ritual, regardless of whether or not I'm surrounded by other people, whether I'm having my weekday meal of cereal, coffee and orange juice or a sunday meal of bacon and eggs, whether I'm eating it at 7 in the morning or 2 in the afternoon.
mmm breakfast!

In Malaysia you can have all sorts of things for breakfast. Nasi lemak, chapati, fried noodles...whatever you wish, really.

When I'm back home I'd normally have toast (with butter, peanut butter, or Nutella), cereal, fruit, and Milo. On Sundays we'd often have eggs, French toast (savoury; I'm surprised people eat them with maple syrup!!), paratha, or sausages.

Here in college I'd have cereal, toast (peanut butter + butter + honey = YUM), and/or fruit, though occasionally I'll have a hot dish like croissants, pancakes, or baked beans. On weekends they bring out the hot breakfasts, so I'll have eggs, hash browns (the oilier the better), baked beans on toast, and sausages - though now that I've cut out red meat from my diet, I don't eat sausages anymore.

In Japan they really FEED you for breakfast. Every morning for 6 weeks I'll have all sorts of food for the morning - grilled fish, miso soup, duck/goose meat once, rice, eggs, sushi...you name it, they had it. In Japan I picked up the (yummy) habit of eating raw egg on rice. A lot of my tour mates were grossed out but I loved it.

I was quite happy in Europe too, particularly in The Netherlands and Belgium as they had CHOCOLATE for breakfast. Chocolate sprinkles on bread! Every morning! Yum! In Belgium I had 3 cups of hot chocolate every morning for a week. Koln was a bit painful though - I was hosted in a Catholic monastery and only had the same old bread and the same old cheese day in day out. I was SO GLAD to be out of there.

great, now I'm hungry again.

(This is one of those posts where I talk about Korea yet again. Sorry.)

One of those many little expat-life things that have always, I don't know, discombobulated me a bit about living in Korea is that most people eat exactly the same stuff for breakfast as they might for lunch or dinner or whatever -- rice, fish, kimchi in all its varieties, seaweed, etc. There's a bit of a 'breakfast culture' these days developing along with the burgeoning coffee culture (thank god, finally) -- mostly the continental thing of good coffee and some kind of fresh baked goods -- but I so miss greasy-spoon diner heart-stopper breakfasts on the weekends, sometimes.

At least for the last year or two I've been able to buy bacon and sausages and sourdough bread and make my own at home.

Kimchi and grilled fish in the morning, much as my palate has changed over the years, just don't cut it.

Best (or at least most memorable breakfasts) ever? The little no-star hotel me and a buddy stayed at in Paris for a few weeks way back when. Jugs of drinking chocolate and coffee, exquisite fresh croissants and sliced baguettes with jams and jellies.... oh, man.

Now I'm hungry, too.

Where are the people who eat cold left-overs for breakfast? Did I miss them? This morning's breakfast was three left-over sausages with plenty of onion gravy in a bowl with some peas and corn, a bucket of sweet milky tea and the small left-over piece of merlot-chocolate that I somehow missed yesterday.

Where are the eaters of cold pizza out of a box that's been left on the coffee table all night? Where are the curry-munchers who prefer cold Thai with extra chilli to wake 'em up?

Looking at these photo's leads me to a sad conclusion - most of these people appear to go to bed sober.

I've definitely been guilty of leftovers for breakfast. I'm watching my carb and gluten intake and when I'm like 'dear Arioch not another goddamn omelette' I end up eating dinner leftovers for breakfast. Nothing like chicken mole at 7 am. I have also had slabs of cheddar when in a hurry. Those were dark days.

This morning? High protein milk, soy protein powder, cocoa powder and natural peanut butter, in the blender for a few minutes. I really need to switch it up a bit, but it takes a lot of flavor to cover the soy powder. Blerg, dehydrated beans. Still, I won't be hungry until lunch and there's no HFCS (or any sweetener at all) in it.

I'm very sad that it looks like the gluten's going to have to go. There's a breakfast place within walking distance from home that has a line on weekend mornings. Belgian waffle with a mound of sliced strawberries, fresh whipped cream, and a side of meat (bacon/sausages, I don't care. Somethin' greasy.) And the other place with 40 different kinds of pancake! Sigh.

I've definitely been guilty of leftovers for breakfast.

Guilty of?

Once in a while I really love leftovers for breakfast --- especially The College Special of cold pizza.

Now I have a voracious meal-sharing live-in partner, and it's been years since I had a nice cold piece of pizza for breakfast, its cheese a thick, pale sheet waiting for my teeth to break through, its crust stiffened with chill, its flavors so different from last night, more subdued, more bashful.

I think next time we have pizza, I'll wrap up a piece and stash it for breakfast.

ZachsMind - Cafe Brazil is good (I'm a big fan of their chicken quesadillas, though that's not really breakfast food). Have you tried Poor Richard's in east Plano? Printed on the wall: "Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dinner like a pauper."

Somebody or other did a great little song about "Cold Pizza for Breakfast" -- at work now, so can't look up who.

Fried leftover mashed 'tatoes are great with eggs in the morning. A little green Tabasco on there. And slice up a beefsteak tomato and briefly pan-fry the slices. Hot, sweet black coffee on the side. Heaven!

Come to think of it, leftover enchiladas suiza make a pretty good hot breakfast.

Oh, and breakfast today was a big handsome cinnamon bun*, warmed a moment in the nuke, and a big cup of slightly milky coffee with a scant spoon of sugar.

*I made a batch of oatmeal molasses bread yesterday, and on a whim I shaped a bit of the dough into a few big fat buns rubbed with butter and rolled with cinnamon sugar. Mmm mmm that was tasty.

The best breakfasts are at Cora's.

I like the 'Bobby Button', a thin spinach and cheddar omelette between two crepes with a side of Hollandaise, home fries, and a side of fruit that would would be a whole breakfast at a lot of places.

Not cheap but stellar.

OK, for me breakfast is all about breads: rolls, whole grain bread with grains on top, black bread, etc.

And they are all ridiculously delicious with Schokostreusel a.k.a Hagelslag.

And, as at least one of my dutch friends confirmed, it has to be dark (regular) chocolate, not milk chocolate!

OK, it's not particularly healthy (whole grain though), but it's breakfast, it's for jump starting the body.

Caffeine and sugar, can't beat that, hey!

Punks. Branding irons. Barbed wire. Rattlesnakes filled with masonry nails and carpet tacks. Etc.

(Also a blueberry, banana, orange and wheat germ smoothie, oatmeal an egg white omelet and two big apples. I do like raw egg on rice on occasion, Sundays I make pancakes, mushroom omelets and venison sausage for the kids...jeezus, I did used to eat punks for breakfast, when did I get domesticated?)

A cinnamon-raisin bagel, toasted, with cream cheese, maybe some juice, or just tea. That's my staple. I usually skip lunch after that.

If I really want to splurge and indulge the whole family, I make my cinnamon french toast with butter and powdered sugar on the weekends. MMm.

This is a dangerous thread. I'm wanting my second breakfast now!

I can't believe that no has mentioned the breakfast burrito yet... One large flour tortilla wrapping eggs, fried potatoes, bacon, breakfast sausage, cheese and fresh salsa...

Different places make them differently... Some have beans in them, or instead of sausage and bacon you might get corned beef hash. Or the eggs might be made with chorizo and the whole mess topped off with an enchilada sauce and a dollop of sour cream. I think you get the idea -- a sort of Mexican-themed breakfast all stuffed into a tortilla. It's one of my favorite breakfast foods.

So, maybe its just me feeling nostaglic for American cereal (which I'd have every morning when I'm there), this is an interesting thread.

I took a picture of my own breakfast (I took it over a month ago) while I'm in Dakar, Senegal.

two morningstar farms "sausage" patties on two pepperige farm wheat mini-bagels.

with ketchup.

and watermelon juice. (as a drink, on the side, not *on* the sausage bagels)

yumm.

i have to be in the right "mood" for sweets for breakfast. otherwise, it's an exclusively savory experience for me.
