Pretty cool. Especially for those of us without the ability to play the awesome sounding real thing.

Yet.

After playing Portal last night, this one really pales in comparison. It's hard to recreate the sheer insanity of the original in 2D.

It's also missing a computerized voice telling you that "Take your daughter to work day is the best day to get her tested."

Portal's less-polished predecessor, Narbacular Drop, is free and has modest system requirements.

Man, if only there was a way to resume where you left off... I got to level 28 and realized "shit I just wasted an hour," but I'd like to try more later. I'm not going to replay the first 28 levels again though.

Portal was absolutely fantastic, one of the most amusingly entertaining games I have played in awhile. Also the first game in a very, very long time to make me actually want to buy merchandise based on it.

Good times. I believe that my housemate and I are going to split the cost of the Orange Box when it comes out. Neither of us have really played that much Half Life either, so that's nice too. Really looking forward to the PS3 version.

argh, no save feature! i'm only up to level 36 and i have work soon.. better leave computer on.

good game, it'll hold me off for a week till i can get the orange box retail here. thanks!

Orange Box is way worth it.

BTW, broke this one within 3 minutes...

I really missed the ability to aim portals through existing portals. This was a key element in Narbacular Drop, and I'm sure also in Portal. Still, it was fun, and yay, delicious cake!
posted by Eideteker at 8:38 PM on October 11, 2007

Nope, can't shoot portals through portals in Portal. Fucking awesome game though, I just beat the Advanced Levels. Last one is a bitch!
posted by Mach5 at 8:42 PM on October 11, 2007

Portal does NOT allow you to shoot portals through other portals, FYI. Dunno why they made the change.

P.S. I'm making a note here. HUGE SUCCESS.

You can, actually. When you first go to the game, pick level select, and then scroll down to find your level highlighted in green.

Or just activate the console from the options menu in-game and type 'nextlevel' a bunch of times.

Seriously missing the AI voice, which is half the fun of Portal.

"Did you know that you can donate one or all of your internal organs to the Self-Esteem Fund for Girls? It's true!"

(That last Advanced Level is a bitch. Still can't figure out how to get past those turrets. No, don't tell me!)

Portal through portal makes the game way too easy.
posted by betaray at 11:34 PM on October 11, 2007

Dude, neckro23, I'm stuck too. I also haven't beat the 4th one but that's only because I got really mad and quit.

yes! finally! hahaha! and it only took me the better part of a day. ah.. hm. shame i'm wasting my youth on computer games, but at least this one makes me think!
posted by Dillonlikescookies at 5:09 AM on October 12, 2007

Yes make sure you post the full-screen .swf in order to make sure the game's creators get no benefit whatsoever from you playing it.

How the heck do you get past 9? I suck.
posted by inigo2 at 6:52 AM on October 12, 2007

9 and 15 are a step up on the difficulty, I think.
this game does a great job of capturing the gameplay, much more than I'd've thought.

But now I'm stuck on different levels in both games.

thanks for posting this.

Now I wish they'd finish Nightmare House 2.

End Credits from the 3-D Version of the game - best ending credits I've ever seen (film included). (Note: the singer is the AI that accompanies you during the game.)

Aha! I didn't realize you could open a new portal while you were in the air. That helps.
posted by inigo2 at 8:20 AM on October 12, 2007

I'm glad that the real Portal was relatively short. I got motion sick both times I sat down to play it. It was worth it though. The game gives you a new appreciation for 3D physics in games and oh man, the end credits were so, so awesome, as was the final gameplay scene. I giggled a lot. Valve deserves cake.

I can't get past level 9, anyone know of a walkthrough?
posted by Bonzai at 8:56 AM on October 12, 2007

There's hints to beat level 9 in this thread already - it's not as hard as you think it is. It took me a good 10 minutes to beat it, but once I did, there was this "ah-ha" moment that has helped me beat the levels after it more easily.

This is awesome, by the way. I need to remember to come back to this after work.

on linux, I'm having trouble with my gun "forgetting" to aim. real piss-off on the first level where timing is important. fun otherwise...

This version suffers from a serious lack of cake.

Ok, I admit to sucking, how the hell do you get past level 13?
posted by quin at 12:02 PM on October 12, 2007

Level 13 spoiler!
You have to put one on the left wall, and get it to spit you fast enough to hit the part in the middle, plus you have to time it right. As for coming out fast enough, remember the faster you go in, the faster you come out. Think about #9.
posted by inigo2 at 1:26 PM on October 12, 2007

It must be the timing thing then, because I tried that and kept getting fried while I was still in the air. I'll have to keep plugging away at it.

Thanks.

posted by quin at 3:18 PM on October 12, 2007

Yep, it was a timing thing.

I... want to play portal now just to see the credits.

It's a Portal reference.
POSSIBLE SPOILERS
At the beginning, the computer tells you that when you finish the experiments, there will be cake.

Argh - level 14 is a blocker. Must one star a new portal while they are in the air or somesuch?
posted by redbeard at 8:11 AM on October 15, 2007

Level 14: Nope, no need to start new portals while in the air.
1st spikey thing: When you first run into the room, shoot 1 portal up and to the right, and one straight down. Safe.
2nd spikey thing: Jump down, and immediately shoot one to the right (through the hole, hitting the target) and the second straight down.
3rd spikey thing: Shoot one up on the left wall as high as possible. Shoot the second in the ground. Jump up and fall down the one on the ground, and it should have the power to push you out of the other onto the platform. Run to the door.

Freaking game keeps bugging out on level 38. I drop the box into a portal and it appears somewhere else entirely, forcing me to restart the level. Ugh.

Level 37 is the nastiest one. Finished them today. :)

Right, I didn't mean 14 - I meant 15 - hrm....
posted by redbeard at 9:59 PM on October 15, 2007

Level 15: No...
Here's how I solved it: Standing on the opening platform, place two portals on the platform below you, close to the glass wall. Jump down into one portal, which shoots you up into the air out of the second portal, and land on the glass wall (this is tricky). Then shoot a portal onto the platform to the left of the blue sizzling things. Now, wait for the right moment to jump into the portal to your left and pop out of the one on the right, run across the blue trap and hop to the exit.

posted by knave at 10:56 PM on October 15, 2007

I thought 36 was worse than 37, myself. (And worse than 38 and 39.) Maybe because the timing needed for 36 was giving me headaches b/c of my crappy (jumpy) computer. Going back to finish (hopefully) 40 now.
posted by inigo2 at 8:01 AM on October 16, 2007

I found the timing in Level 36 to be frustrating but ultimately do-able. I have given up trying to complete Level 37. Can anyone cross that blue fryer in the basement without getting killed? It looks wayyyy to wide to traverse in the ~5 secs that the blue fryer is off. I am not going to all that work on Level 37 just so I can get fried at the end. I have gotten that far twice on Level 37, and both times, I didn't come even close to traversing the blue fryer before it turned on again. Even with perfect timing, I can't get the speed up to make it across.
