Being the gearhead that I am...that's the coolest thing i've seen all week. posted by rhythim at 3:42 PM on October 12, 2007 [2 favorites]
Too bad they don't have a complete cycle, though at the rate they were filming (assuming it wasn't digital), maybe they couldn't rig the camera with enough film. posted by exogenous at 3:45 PM on October 12, 2007

This is actually somewhat frightening. posted by tepidmonkey at 4:09 PM on October 12, 2007
The only thing better would have been enough film to see the whole thing up to actual speed (and yeah, that would be hard to actually see, but still cool). posted by pupdog at 4:17 PM on October 12, 2007
Very cool. It would be neat to see this with a 2 stroke engine as well. posted by Sprocket at 4:18 PM on October 12, 2007
Sure, it looks great but it'll never catch on. Now, help me get this endoscope up me horse's arse. posted by Abiezer at 4:46 PM on October 12, 2007 [1 favorite]
Very cool, thanks! posted by c*r at 4:49 PM on October 12, 2007
As someone who studied combustion engine design in college, this is cool. I wish we had had something like this. posted by caddis at 4:49 PM on October 12, 2007
Cool; can we get an Ottocycle tag? posted by TedW at 4:52 PM on October 12, 2007

A nearly perfect double. A bit eerie, actually. posted by ulotrichous at 5:43 PM on October 12, 2007
Somehow, 40+ years ago, when I was learning about Otto cycle engines, I always pictured spark ignition as being more violent. Before electronic ignition and thin electrode platinum plugs, maybe it was, but it's hardly noticeable in this video.

So cool. Makes me want to dig up my die grinder and give porting and polishing another try. posted by klarck at 7:23 PM on October 12, 2007
This would be cooler if they would stick things in the combustion chamber and we could watch what happens to it. Things like a french fry, a pinball, a tamagotchi, and so forth. posted by rolypolyman at 8:51 PM on October 12, 2007
Is it so wrong that I want to see a video of an engine throwing a rod? posted by Tube at 9:11 PM on October 12, 2007
