Why is German so funny to me?! posted by BlackLeotardFront at 9:50 PM on October 16, 2007
Bletch: at least that pool prank only traps young girls with bouncing breasts. Strange, but fascinating. posted by anthill at 9:57 PM on October 16, 2007
What would have been extremely cool is if they got a fuck-off scary demon to appear in the "mirror" 30 seconds after they realise they have no reflection. Like Darkness from Legend.
There's a classic Halloween prank in which one sits (costumed and still) amongst some similarly costumed dummies and scare the beejezus out of small children - but you're kind of expecting pranks like that on Halloween.
Some random mall elevator? Get me the fuck out of there. I'd crawl out the roof hatch if I had to. I'm already freaked out enough being in a mall in the first place. posted by loquacious at 11:04 PM on October 16, 2007
German TV is the best way to YouTube, because the video title doesn't give away what you're about to see. posted by shakespeherian at 11:10 PM on October 16, 2007
Sorry to get all racist on your asses, but Americans don't know how to take a joke, and Dillonlikescookies' link proves it. How cool were those birds when the mannequin started moving? Americans would be straight on the phone to their lawyer demanding freeeee money for angst caused and, erm, the ensuing eating disorder. :-)
Two others that spring to mind from European candid camera shows.
** Some unlucky mugs "won" a helicopter joy ride. But it turned out to be the helicopter stunt ride from hell. You should have seen the peoples' faces. Pure terror. Including a poor young boy aged maybe 13.
** A celebrity candid camera where some bird is in a plane and the pilot passes out. She's basically dead and she knows it. She took it extremely well when it turned out to be a hoax. Amazingly well. posted by uncanny hengeman at 12:23 AM on October 17, 2007 [1 favorite has favorites]
Relax with the anti-American bullshit, uncanny hengeman. As if the elevator prank couldn't be done in the USA. In that same video you get one guy who turns into a panty-wetting schoolgirl from fear and a man who seems to threaten the sneezing guy with violence.
So, yeah, more extreme prank shows here would be fun, but that's all that's left of your point.

I wouldn't sue. The only eating disorder I'd have would be the one where I wig the fuck out and eat the brains of that freaky plastic dude in self-defense.
Shit, man, this is America. Not only are there still wide-open spaces with things like, oh, fuckin' bears, alligators or cougars - but the urban landscape and local fauna is pretty damn wild and toothy, too. Namely, the humans. Goddamn weirdos. STAY AWAY FROM MY STUFF.
You say we're prone to violence, that - at best - we're cowboys. I say we're prone to quick reaction times and strong instincts honed by evolution. posted by loquacious at 1:22 AM on October 17, 2007 [1 favorite has favorites]

Loquacious' Halloween prank and quick reaction time.
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Oh... *wheezes* Ok, that's not that funny, but I'm an idiot and I can't stop laughing. Give me a second.
*finishes reviewing video, composes self*
Note that the rapid reaction time also applies to the just how quickly he realizes how badly he screwed up, to how quickly he begins running - and apologizing from a safe distance before returning and attempting to help. It all unfolds very rapidly.
A similar sequence of events can be seen here. Note that both videos feature bitches getting knocked the fuck out.
The moral of the story? Don't prod, annoy, startle or otherwise prank Americans. But, of course, we probably all already knew that. Ahem. posted by loquacious at 2:06 AM on October 17, 2007
The last prank in the elevator is my favourite the reactions of the unsuspecting victims is the best especially the old woman and then the last couple. posted by electricinca at 3:02 AM on October 17, 2007

Peter, the lettering on the sign in the background of your fat kid pic, does not look like English to me. And as us yanks are all monolingual, that kid must be a fat furrner. posted by bashos_frog at 4:09 AM on October 17, 2007
And as an aside, I was filmed for a German prank show once - in NYC. No leaf-covered pits, just some chick with her clothes painted on, taking a seat next to me, and chatting with the bartender, at a bar on 9th st.
I tried to play it cool, but a filled-to-the-brim martini is not the best drink to have in such a situation. My lack of fine motor skills gave me away. posted by bashos_frog at 4:18 AM on October 17, 2007

The woman in question is Italian TV presenter and model Alessia Marcuzzi. If you can find the vid it's worth watching. posted by hnnrs at 5:21 AM on October 17, 2007
I haven't got the reaction times of these guys, but the burn would boil over in about thirty seconds and then there'd be some dismay on the set. If y'all prod me for a reaction, y'all gonna get one. posted by seanmpuckett at 5:32 AM on October 17, 2007

The woman who keeps taking off and putting on her glasses, and then muses that she must be from another planet, really makes the mirror prank clip.
also this
The last part is the best. Especially with the old woman who's really freaking out—"I'm not blind yet!" Of course, if the last thing I heard someone say before he disappeared was "Lieber Gott!" then I'd probably be freaking out too. posted by oaf at 7:21 AM on October 17, 2007

I'm one of those slow-to-react people that would totally be beaten and devoured by zombies on the very first day post-apocalypse, but the Halloween prank clip had me laughing until I was crying.
Thanks for the great thread! posted by misha at 9:33 AM on October 17, 2007

Anybody know how they did the mirror prank? Light-bending spray on the prankee as they come into the bathroom? posted by sneebler at 6:51 AM on October 18, 2007
It's a pair of twins. If you watch closely they aren't completely coordinated, but they're damn good at it. posted by oaf at 7:29 AM on October 18, 2007 [1 favorite has favorites]
I'm guessing the producers built an identical mirror image room on the other side of the glass and, of course, used the twins. If you watch carefully, you'll notice any large motion instigated by the twin with her back to the camera is made with slightly unusual deliberation. posted by bz at 8:06 AM on October 18, 2007
