Frank says that on some of the recordings 'they used the "Microgroove" process on 45s that allows a 7" pressing of tracks that are longer than 4 minutes but results in lower volume and more noise'. Hence the warm hissing.

Damn. I was expecting this to be one of those stories about recovering ancient voices/music by playing a piece of pottery like a record. This is cool too!
