Lucky Dube Shot Dead - Lucky Dube, the South African Reggae musician, has been shot dead by car hijackers in Johannesburg. In front of his son.
To say that Lucky Dube was an important artist is an understatment.
Shit, that sucks. When I went through my Reggae stage in my early teens Lucky Dube was one of my heroes. Slave was a fantastic album. posted by twistedonion at 1:38 AM on October 19, 2007

Adds to my picture of violent crime being out of control in South Africa - and then I remember that the same thing is happening every day on the streets of Philadelphia. posted by three blind mice at 2:54 AM on October 19, 2007
What little I knew about the man was, like asok says, his constant positive message. And now the scumbags get the final say. posted by Abiezer at 3:00 AM on October 19, 2007

Now, by human law, those of us who have enjoyed his music in the past are now required to like it even more due to his passing. posted by CheeseburgerBrown at 4:21 AM on October 19, 2007
Carjacking, a Polo? This doesn't seem quite right, even in South Africa. And death isn't that typical an outcome. Perhaps this was some kind of hit, disguised as a carjacking. Pity. I never heard of the guy myself, but then, I don't listen to much reggae. posted by Goofyy at 8:10 AM on October 19, 2007
RIP Lucky Dube, what a senseless and tragic loss.
Three Blind Mice, your comment is utter nonsense. Johannesburg is one of the most violent cities in the world's history. Something like six percent of its inhabitants have experienced a carjacking. It is beyond me why you would even mention Philly (or for that matter any American city, even a really dangerous one, say Detroit or LA or NYC twenty years ago) in the same sentence. Unless you have some kind of PC / white guilt issue with admitting that Joburg is exceptionally violent and dangerous. Could that be it? Try to work on keeping dumb shit like that to yourself. posted by alexwoods at 8:34 AM on October 19, 2007
Goofyy... Push "Rewind" on the ol' VCR, run through "The Italian Job" once more, but this time repeat to yourself, as often as necessary, "This is NOT a documentary."
Have a real nice day. posted by Mike D at 11:39 AM on October 19, 2007

Could you imagine a Britney Spears car-jacking? Picture that gap between Suid Afrika and the Us of A.
I emigrated with my family when I was 13. From South Africa to the U.S. of A.
I was mugged for my bicycle twice while I lived there. Granted, I was white, and relatively well off. On the other hand, I was eight years old the first time, and eleven the second. A child. No boo-hoos for me. Please.
I know five people in South Africa who have been car-jacked. Three of them are still alive.
This is not out of the ordinary.
On another hand, the average age in South Africa is 23.
Yes, I hijacked the thread. It deserves nothing less.
I plan on moving back (from Aus, TX) to South Africa as soon as possible. posted by chupwalla at 2:43 AM on October 20, 2007
