Double. And I still can’t get it to spin counterclockwise.

Sorry, but double.

i swear there is NO WAY she's spinning anti-clockwise.

I know, eh? I feel so special now. Like I'm really part of the MeFi gang. *crystal emo tear*

Before this thread is deleted - yea, I too could not for the life of me get her to spin counter clockwise. After a few tries, tilting my head and closing my right eye - briefly, and only for a moment, she turned otherwise. Within 2 seconds she was back to clockwise again.
posted by bluedaniel at 4:24 AM on October 20, 2007

i just had that moment where she span the other way round.. i concentrated a little more... and now she wont stop turning anti-clockwise. its driving me nuts, i felt better when it was clockwise.

The first time this was posted on metafilter, I could only see her spinning clockwise. This time, I've concentrated and can finally focus on her rack.

I don't care which way she's spinning she have nice boobies.

You spin me right round, baby. Right round.
posted by Abiezer at 4:48 AM on October 20, 2007

For some reason, Abiezer, that made me think of "You, shook me aaaaall niiight loooong". And now it's stuck in my head. Thanks.
posted by Phire at 4:51 AM on October 20, 2007

She started off resolutely clockwise, but then I found if I cock my head to one side, she changes direction and then sticks there until I repeat the trick.
phire - I was recalling cheese-o-riffic Dead or Alive - but I expect you knew that.

Dancer, indeed.

I have to watch YouTube by proxy now (cheers China net cops). So I have only just seen that the perspicacious commenters there are boldly suggesting that Pete Burns may be gay! Our future is safe in such insightful hands.
posted by Abiezer at 5:00 AM on October 20, 2007

Left brain-right brain is bullshit, any connection between that and which direction the dancer spins is bullshit, and this is a double.

Also, if you take the image apart in GIMP or Photoshop, she's spinning clockwise.

Oh my god, I'm gay :(
posted by strawberryviagra at 5:39 AM on October 20, 2007

I don't care how you take the image apart, she's not "really" spinning in either direction because she's not real. It's a 2-dimensional image that's completely black with no characteristics other than its outer shape.

I'm glad that girl finally decided to get up off her butt and get some exercise.

Narrow your attention to the calf of one leg, then think about what the other leg would be doing to either be crossing one way or the other in terms of its motion in space. Then look up to see that the whole image has reversed motion (which makes absolutely no sense to my brain as I try to understand how it could possibly look any other way, examining the outline). Once you've done this, you can achieve the unsettline effect of a change in direction every half turn. It's bizarre.

unsettline = unsettling

I thought the spinning girl was an ad, and she was spinning clockwise until I read that she was part of the test and now she spins counter-clockwise. Can't get her to spin, or even see how she could spin, clockwise again.

I can switch the direction back and forth at will, what the hell does that say?

Look 'up' from below at the image and it changes

the right brain left brain stuff is complete bull
posted by 0bvious at 6:09 AM on October 20, 2007

If I remember correctly, the right field of vision is interpreted by the left brain and vice versa. This works for me: Look to the left of the spinner and, in peripheral vision, blink a few times to cut the 'momentum' of your attention, and she spins counter clockwise. Look to the right to reverse. I find the farther to the side, the more consistent the result. But sometimes she just swings back and forth.

I think the hard division represented in the right/left list has long ago been superseded by more complicated relationships.

I can get her spinning either direction without much trouble.

Ever meet someone who thought the silhouette of Crow, in the theatre in MST3k, was facing backwards toward the camera? Same basic thing.
posted by rifflesby at 6:17 AM on October 20, 2007

or even see how she could

That's the great bit.
posted by dreamsign at 6:17 AM on October 20, 2007

Yeah, I figured out how to make her switch direction, and it's pretty much like Jimmet says.

What I do is focus way away from her, so she's in my peripheral vision, and then essentially force myself to see her spinning the direction I want. I can pick out her foot spinning, so I just tell myslf that it's going clockwise or anti-clockwise, and within a second or two, the brain adapts. Then I can slowly (over 3 or 4 revolutions) move her back into my center of vision and see her spinning the way I want.

What's weird is that each time I see her spinning in a certain direction, I can't imagine how you could see it any other way. That is very, VERY weird.

Shame it's a double.
posted by Malor at 6:23 AM on October 20, 2007

Once I got it to switch once it wasn't too hard to get it to happen again. Like Malor said use your peripheral vision, then refocus. It's all about what you decide is her facing you and her facing away from you. If you decide that is her right leg she is standing on she spins anti-clockwise. If you decide it's her left leg then she is spinning clockwise.

nice illusion, has nothing to do with right brain-left brain; perpetuates stereotypes about lateralization that have about as much validity as your average urban legend. Should go straight to snopes.

This is what they call "folk neuropsychology." Why people want to believe in these dichotomies is the interesting thing, not the supposed differences between the hemispheres, which are greatly exaggerated.
posted by cogneuro at 6:48 AM on October 20, 2007

Does this have any scientific validity? I want to forward this to some people but I'm not going to take any part in perpetuating a bunch of scientific baloney. And FWIW I see it clockwise.

Me too, public, and I only have a left eye. Does that make a difference?

I love how despite being a complete double, discussion's taken off and is as robust as ever :D ahh, MeFi.
posted by Phire at 7:15 AM on October 20, 2007

The secret is to look to her left, so she's not in focus. She'll spin one way. Then focus on something to her right. She'll spin the other way.

And enough about the boobies, jeez. Quit listening to your genitals - this is about brain function.

She keeps changing directions - I am not sure if that is a good or a bad thing.
