Compulsory reading for the 'American Civil War was fought over states' rights' crowd.

The Confederacy, "is founded upon exactly the opposite idea; its foundations are laid, its cornerstone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery, subordination to the superior race, is his natural and moral condition."

This from the Confederate vice-president, Alexander H. Stephens. Next time someone tells me flying the Confederate standard is an expression of Southern Heritage(tm), I'll point them in the direction of that article. If the Confederacy was founded upon the right to own slaves, then what's Heritage, besides a wistfull reminiscence of a time when it was ok, nay, a moral imperative to subjugate an entire race of human beings?

Interesting article, Mocata. Thanks for posting it.

Being largely ignorant of US politics, I wasn't aware that history was being so successfully rewritten.
