X-COM!

X-COM: UFO Defense is now available as a free download. (Released in the UK as "UFO: Enemy Unknown") One of the all-time great strategy games, it always astounded me that a turn-based game could raise my adrenaline level so much.

By the way, the second X-Com game is also available, but it's a waste of time.

This post was deleted for the following reason: Understand that I love X-Com with a burning, unending passion, more deeply than most people love their pets and/or children: we've had links to Home of the Underdogs many times (here's an older canonical example) and, your "now available" notwithstanding, there doesn't seem to be anything new here. I'd love to see a great X-Com post, but this isn't the way to do it. -- cortex

Sweet.

Now available? Lots of old games can be downloaded at abandonware sites like The Underdogs. I'm not sure that means that the publisher endorses it.

You can buy the second game on Steam.

Awesome. Now give me the original Laser Squad. If only I had the interweb at home...

I was abducted by this game for some indefinite length of time and my junior year of college suffered greatly. I curse thee X-COM!

This is just a pirate site, Stephen. Very few of the programs available on Underdogs are legitimate.

Because they're hosted in Hong Kong or Taiwan, they're much harder than normal for the BSAA to shut down. It's not impossible, but because they have only old games that are hard to find for sale anymore, the BSAA hasn't gone to the effort it would take to kill them.

Further, the site's admin has been basically MIA for two years, and I most emphatically would suggest finding other sources for your abandonware needs. I do not trust the downloads from Underdogs anymore. I know they've been hacked repeatedly, and with the absent admin, I would not be surprised if numerous downloads had been trojaned.

This site is not legal, and it may be unsafe to boot.

Has anybody tried Ufo: Alien Invasion? It is a GPL remake, based on the Quake 2 engine.

Ufo: Aftermath and Ufo: Aftershock is another pair of recent games inspired by the X-COM series. Somewhat different from the original in spirit, but also with excellent gameplay.

On preview, the status and availability of abandonware games is a well-known can of worms - I'm guessing this post may be gone soon. StevenC, how about a proper X-COM worship FPP?

For those who might want to try downloading and/or running this without hosing their own system, get Virtual PC. Create a fresh VM and if the program is a complete trojan, just kill the VM and delete it. Or use VMware Player or VMware server, both of which are also free-as-in-beer.
