"Thanks for the honour. Oh, and for the Oscar too..." Is that an MBE on Russell Crowe's chest? A quick google suggests his grandad received one: dunno the protocol of wearing someone else's medal, but is that the first time an Oscar winner's gone on stage with a British gong?

"Sunday, 9:10 p.m.: Russell Crowe marches into the interview tent like he's daring somebody to throw the first punch. An Australian reporter calls him mate and asks him how it feels to win an Academy Award. Crowe announces that this process will go a lot smoother for everyone if we ask him questions that he can answer yes or no. But his attitude softens when somebody asks about the red medal that's pinned to his tuxedo jacket. Crowe says it's an M.B.E., which Queen Elizabeth awarded to Crowe's grandfather for his service as a war photographer. It turns out that Russell is just a big softy."

Muh. The Oscar should be inscribed, "Sorry We Boned You In The Ear Last Time." He certainly deserved it then and not now, but either way, his practiced sullen-macho cool is wearing very thin.

Why yes, Holgate, I have seen LA Confidential. I've even seen For the Moment. I like Russell Crowe as an actor, I'm just sick of his flavor-of-the-moment status and that Alpha Male, bigger-than-Jesus act.

Oh, yeah, definitely. But since when do Oscars go to the right actors, for the right films, in the right year? And at least it wasn't Tom fucking Hanks again. (Heh. I even remember the furore in Britain over Romper Stomper.)

Oh, standard fare: controversy while it was being considered for a certificate, finally received an "18" after the typical middle-market newspaper campaigns against "this filth", various local councils refused permission for cinemas to show it. It got its first UK television showing -- on Channel 4's cable film channel -- last week, as part of a season of censored films. (Even now, you can't get Natural Born Killers on video here, for a number of reasons.)

If you're hating Russell, you can always dig up Virtuosity and Cool World for a laugh. The man's patterning his career after Mel Gibson. And, like Mel, his time will be up in about six years or so.

Is it inappropriate to wear an M.B.E. if you haven't been presented the award yourself. See, that's what puzzles me. I've never seen anyone wear an MBE before: obviously, they have the ribbon etc, but when they're presented, you normally see the recipient showing of the medal in its box. And as for wearing another person's medal: well, I'm sure the Queen will let him off with a warning this time.
