On his compass, "Good/Regress" and "Evil/Progress" are presented as diametrically opposed pairs. There's something deeply wrong, albeit awfully common, with the idea that "Evil" and "Progress" are opposite one other.

I think you might be misreading his intention. The compass just maps the layout as Good->topleft, Evil->topright, Progress->bottomleft, Regress->bottomright. Sure, he sides Progress with Good, And Regress with Evil, but I don't think he thought it through any farther than that. I don't think he intended to have Evil ideally diametrically opposed to Progress.

Well, I think the issue that Wolfdog raises that's worth mentioning is that there is a range where progress and evil meet, and where good and regress meet, but that doesn't seem to exist in his model except in sort of a mishmash in the middle of everything. I agree with Wolfdog that the entire project would have been improved if it had been, for instance, Good in the top left, evil in the bottom right, and then progress perhaps in the top right and regress in the bottom left. That way, there could be stuff that's in between good and evil but solidly in the progress camp which would then be in the top right corner of the map. Or there could be stuff that is stuff that isn't necessarily progressive or regressive but certainly good, which would go in the top left corner. Right now it looks like the worst stuff in the world should logically be halfway down the leftmost edge of the page, where he has "Metadata Gaol." Instead, we Fear Uncertainty Doubt way top left, which would imply that those things aren't at all Regressive. It's just a design criticism, though.

Exactly. I think you and Wolfdog are thinking about this a lot more thoroughly than the artist did. It looks like he only has a cursory understanding of most of the topics he put on the page. I'm doubting he thought through how everything would logically sit on a proper graph. It's just a kind of "Here's the bad land. They make the regressive stuff. Here's the good land. They make the progressive stuff", and not much more.

Totally loved that. So much better than other typical social mapping visualization. It's fun, 3-D and the artist says if you don't like it or want to better it, then go for it.

A slightly mad poster put together on behalf of Osmosoft for tomorrow's internal Open Source Awareness Day which Phil has printed out in scary A0. Like all my images, I've put this under a CC, so feel free to reproduce it, mash it up, do a better job, whatever!

Exactly. It seems to be a collection of items that author finds distasteful, and ones he likes, with obtusely created imagery attached to it. Shall we draw pictures of Ballmer and Gates with grotesquely distorted faces next?

It took me a second to figure out what greatly irritated me about this picture, and then it hit me, it divides issues on the Internet in solely black and white terms, literally (look at the color schemes). It is propaganda, it is poorly created propaganda, and fuck propaganda. Especially for a cause I support.
