Map Paintings by Paula Scher: “These are absolutely, one hundred percent inaccurate,” Paula Scher declares of her colossal map paintings. Then, after a pause: “But not on purpose.” Another pause: they’re actually “sort of right.” [via]

The idea is better than the execution. A lot of work for not very much impact at all.

I quite liked the tsunami one.

Another pause: "Also, they are difficult to fold and stash in a glove compartment."

I'd like to see them in person. From this scale it looks like they're much more about typography than geography.

I give up. I have tried on multiple attempts across an hour to get through to the Maya Stendahl gallery and...nada. I do like the form of her work that I can see from the teasers from her site though. 1/2 x thanks.

her maps are so full of life.

From this scale it looks like they're much more about typography than geography.

It might be relevant to note that Paula Scher is a partner in the design firm Pentagram.

What is it about artists that makes them feel the need to have inexcusably bad, totally unnavigable websites?

Some of the worst sites I've seen on the web are those of photographers, designers, and architects: people who ought to know better.

It's kind of the opposite end of the spectrum from MySpace-bad; that's just poor design borne of ignorance. This is like poor design borne of arrogance.

Aside from that, neat art. But how about a site that's easy to navigate and doesn't have crossfades that make my eyes cross? That way people could, you know, enjoy the art.

I went to the opening last week. The work is fun to see in person, and a nice catalog (oversize) was printed and available.

Paula also made this great diagram that certainly should come in handy around here at times.
