You know, I've had a theory about this for a while. Because as male celebrities are getting more and more plastic surgery, it's just making their skin too taut and their eyes start looking really weirdly feminine. It creeps me out. Their eyes just get beadier and freakier, and they just don't look right on a man. These guys start out fine and then they worry about getting old so they get surgery, their eyes disappear, and POOF! Men become lesbians.

I mean, it's just wrong! Bruce Jenner should've NEVER turned out like that. For God's sake, that should be a felony.

Right, because lesbians are clearly a monolithic blob, and as such their physical attributes while in their "autumn years" are identical and therefore predictable?

I'd hardly call this the "best of the web." I get that the site is trying to be "tongue in cheek," but all it really serves to achieve is the perpetuation of various stereotypes along lines of (one specific) sexuality.

Flagged for being simultaneously offensive (and not in the thought-provoking sense of the word) and rather banal.
posted by numinous at 10:49 AM on November 13, 2007

Well for me, it's just when people's faces start to look like they don't belong on that person or even on someone of their gender that it's noteworthy. Not so much that women or lesbians aren't nice looking themselves, it's got nothing to do with actual lesbians or women. It's just that IN THE NAME OF ALL THAT IS HOLY A MAN LIKE BRUCE JENNER SHOULD NOT LOOK LIKE THAT. Of course, YMMV. Maybe you dig his new look. On second thought? Umm, no. You seem like a smart person, fellow Mefite. So I'm pretty sure it freaks you out too.

People get closer to the middle of the gendered phenotypical spectrum as they age. Men growing their hair longer at that stage... is a new development.
posted by Ambrosia Voyeur at 10:57 AM on November 13, 2007

I really think this is peurile.

As people get older and hormones level off, they tend to get more androgynous. Older women often opt for easier-to-care-for shorter hairstyles, stop wearing as much makeup, and begin to lose the battle against facial hair. Men's faces and bodies begin to soften.

Many people latch onto their gender identity with a death-grip, with some men growing ambitious beards and moustaches, and women making themselves up more dramatically than ever. But otherwise old-age, like babyhood, is simply a time when your gender is of little importance to your physical appearance, reproduction-wise.

For years I've thought that Paul McCartney looked a little like my grandmother. Years ago Ronald Reagan reminded me slightly of my great-grandmother. It's a little funny, but not that interesting, and dragging sexual orientation into it deadens the joke for me. It takes a bitchy comment you might make at a party and stretches the concept into a whole blog. To which I say: ugh.

gompa, I simply used the quotation marks as means of:

1) Specifically referencing my understand of the standard to which FPP ought to adhere ("best of the web"). As per the Guidelines, "A good thread values uniqueness over novelty." There is nothing unique about the pervasive stereotype that aging lesbians are indistinguishable from old men.

2) Conveying what I perceive as the website creator's intentions in making the site ("tongue in cheek").

Thought I obviously employed a sarcastic tone in writing the first sentence of my original response, I did not intend my use of quotation marks to be ironic.

As for your accusation that I consider myself "'above' 'this'," I certainly do. I agree with hermitosis's assertion that the entire thing is puerile. But I must press this issue: why the consternation toward someone who finds this sort of material offensive and thus refuses to participate in what is essentially an unexceptional playground taunting of an entire sexuality?

I'd characterize my response more as bemusement than consternation, but in any case, I'll simply clarify on two counts:

1) I'm not "taunting . . . an entire sexuality." (I'm not sure that's even a thing someone could do. How would you know when you were in the entire sexuality's line of sight?) Anyway, if I'm taunting anyone, I'm taunting Billy Crystal.

2) This thing we're engaged in right here, you and me? That's the opposite of refusing to participate. Hence my bemused consternation.

Kinda off topic... but a fellow student in my Arabic class, a very lovely person that I really like, is actually my own personal Pat. Totally dig them... I'm just really not sure what sex they are. Or were. or want to be. They are probably a he -- they registered under a man's name -- but it's really not evident enough that I'd comfortably address them one way or another. I think maybe he's a woman who's changing/changed into a man. But, also could just be a very butch lesbian who's going by a man's name. Or could be a gay man on estrogen. I honestly just don't know.

Anyhow, it has no bearing on anything & I don't care either way, but sometimes when I'm in zoning out in Arabic class (which happens often) I distract myself by wondering what their backstory is.

There is nothing unique about the pervasive stereotype that aging lesbians are indistinguishable from old men.

The first thing that struck me looking at the photos was that if aging lesbians are indistinguishable from old men, then old men who look like aging lesbians would simply look like old men (syllogism and all).

However, of course, these men look like aging lesbians whereas most old men do not. Which means aging lesbians do not in fact look like old men.

The joke really disintegrates on the second page, where most of the photos are. The imagination required to see most of them as anything but who and what they are requires real effort. You wind up having to mentally erase a lot of their features in order to see the "lesbian".

I wonder if these could become a fad like those Magic Eye pictures. "Yeah, it just looks like Al Franken, right? Now stand back. Unfocus your eyes. Squint a little bit. Do you see her? Do you SEE HER??"
