Ivan Maximov makes some lovely and strange animation.

Two more.

These and more can also be viewed on his site.

I'm not much of a game person, but after reading this I think I would like Full Pipe very much.

Beautiful! Why is it that Russia seems to produce so much great experimental animation?

some say Tale of Tales [w] is the best Soviet ani of all time, others go for Hedgehog in the Fog, both by Norstein, who recently collaborated on a piece with 17th century renga/haiku kingpin Bashō. His next film, a computer devoid hour long adaptation of The Overcoat, is a quarter century in the making. the less interesting, Disneyesque (except for the chain smoking wolf) series, Nu, Pogodi! ("Just you wait"), is the most popular by a long ways. yeh, but Khitruk's parodies are probably the most fun. though why watch Soviet animations when you can watch pre-Soviet entomologicheskii stop-motion? better yet, forget the russkis.

!

I love Hedgehog in the Fog! And Nu Pogodi seriously amazes me and cracks me up. Everyone who knows me is pretty much forced to watch Starewicz. It's required.
