Bush Admin: What You Don't Know Can't Hurt Us

Our Secrets List: The Bush War on Govt. Transparency. Over the years, the Bush Administration has "discontinued annual reports, classified normally public data, de-funded studies, quieted underlings, and generally done whatever was necessary to keep bad information under wraps." TPMmuckraker has compiled a list of "disappeared" information.

This post was deleted for the following reason: this is a single link bloggish op ed link to TPM Muchraker which rarely make good links on metafilter. People who want to rend garments or OMGOMGOMG over this can go to TPM Muckraker which is quite a decent blog in its own right, and yet different from MetaFilter. -- jessamyn

just torture them, they'll give up all the info you need

Why are the administration allowed to keep so many things secret, when regular people have to rethink just what privacy means.

Relax everybody, it is all part of the War on Terrorism. Since they hate us for our freedoms, they figure that if they just eliminate our freedoms, they won't hate us anymore.

you don't say. wake me when he's caught raping and eating children. actually, that wouldn't shock me. maybe if he kept them alive after removing an eyeball, then fucked the socket and gave the brain a "facial". now that... goddamn... sorry 'bout that. but seriously, it would have to be that disgusting and outrageous. this is seriously old news, isn't it? he started right out of the gate with his dad's records, if i'm not mistaken.

doubt it. civil wars have been fought over less. the american civil war, in fact. while individual americans are outraged, modern americans as a nation no longer have the ability to be outraged. and even in a fake democracy, that doesn't cut it.

sure civil wars have been fought over less. but by people that have been pushed beyond the point of reason, for a long time. we're nowhere near the point of being pushed that far. as long as enough people think that a terrorist is right around the corner they'll put up with alot. most of what the admin. has done is fairly esoteric and plenty of people are pissed about it. but, he isn't poisoning kid's toys or something, that's something people can latch onto. it'll be a long time before people get to the point of "taking it to the streets." we've had it too easy, for too long.

So, but, it doesn't really matter....'cos the next administration is going to reverse all this anyway, right?
Right?
*crickets*

Well, we are fat, dumb, and happy. The key to fixing that is to make things worse. Oh, perhaps not actually worse, in the sense that this is worse. But visibly worse, where people feel it. No one's really feeling the effects of this even though it is actually very harmful. I mean bellyfeeling (to borrow from Orwell). Which, really, is where you have to poke most Americans. Something (or a series of somethings) that will get Joe Six Pack off the couch muttering "aw, whatthefu" kind of thing. Something asinine as well as irritating as well as visibly symbolic.
Well, not much time left before the next election, we'll see...

Is there a website or something where I can learn the types of things that would piss off enough Americans in order to affect the types of changes needed to make this country something to be proud of again?
I feel it's my patriotic duty. I have guns, even a loaner or two. Do I get a discount if I get a friend to sign up?
