Either Tay Zonday has a near-superhuman ability to laugh at himself or he is the fastest sell-out in the history of Pop Music.
Well, he is certainly a Pepper.
(And considering I was pleasantly shocked to discover Dr. Pepper's Cherry Vanila flavor was not bad, dammit, I'm gonna try that stuff.) posted by wendell at 5:15 PM on November 28, 2007
He and his voice scare me. posted by CitrusFreak12 at 5:20 PM on November 28, 2007
Looks like Urkel, sounds like Robeson, Tay has the most impressively mis-matched voice since... posted by wendell at 5:23 PM on November 28, 2007
Man.. I hope the /b/ crowd are getting kickbacks or something from this. I mean, they're more responsibility for his fame than he is. posted by tittergrrl at 5:26 PM on November 28, 2007 [1 favorite]
er, more responsible. posted by tittergrrl at 5:26 PM on November 28, 2007
I think it's wonderful! Imagine if you'd never seen the whole meme, the parodies, the remixes, all that, then, BOOM, Tay Zonday is covered with chocolate, singing about Ohio's agriculture (wait, did I hear that right? No matter, I guess). See, that's why this is so great--we internet geeks can look down upon the confused masses and feel all smug and superior. And that's the best Christmas gift of all. posted by MrMoonPie at 5:31 PM on November 28, 2007 [1 favorite]
If the US had a holiday single contest-thing, this would win. posted by jmgorman at 5:34 PM on November 28, 2007
wendell, your right, he does sound like Robeson, I never amde the connection. He should do a cover of "The Four Insurgent Generals." posted by Falconetti at 5:42 PM on November 28, 2007 [1 favorite]
Cherry Chocolate Dr. Pepper sounds good.
And I can't help loving Tay Zonday. He's totally in on the joke. posted by ColdChef at 5:52 PM on November 28, 2007
Oh. But DIET Cherry Chocolate Dr Pepper sounds awful. posted by ColdChef at 5:54 PM on November 28, 2007
I think I just gave up the idea that the interwebs are somehow more edifying than tv. posted by Raoul de Noget at 6:06 PM on November 28, 2007
Near the end, during the sequence when chocolate syrup is thrown on Tay, is that the big-balled squirrel making a cameo? posted by eviltiff at 6:21 PM on November 28, 2007

Are you fucking kidding? Of course Tay should cash in. Quickly. I'm surprised he waited this long. posted by fungible at 6:50 PM on November 28, 2007

I used to work with a pharmacist who gave up drinking. He still liked to attend parties though, and would bring soda pop for himself to drink. He quickly realized that the drinkers were grabbing his pop and using it for their own mixed drinks. Consequently, he began bringing Canfield's diet chocolate fudge soda, and never again had this problem. posted by Tube at 7:49 PM on November 28, 2007

I don't blame him for this. I blame the people at Dr. Pepper's marketing agency that came up with the initial idea.
They're the ones with the money to burn on this... this abomination. posted by sparkletone at 8:56 PM on November 28, 2007
I'd never heard of Tay until this FPP -- Thanks for the chocolate ear candy, chrismear. Especially weird is his McFerrin-meets-the-Shaggs-meets-Brady-Bunch-Opening-Titles mashup of Amazing Grace/Swing Low Sweet Chariot. Not surprisingly, the Cherry Chocolate Rain song is the least entertaining. Beside the one where he reads a novel, that is. posted by not_on_display at 9:35 PM on November 28, 2007
This Chocolate Rain/Radiohead "Talk Show Host" mashup is way more good than it should be. posted by afu at 10:47 PM on November 28, 2007

Yes, we know you love chocolate, but there is really no need to incorporate it into an FPP. posted by Asherah at 11:28 PM on November 28, 2007
Dude is (or was?) a Ph.D. candidate in American Studies at U of Wisconsin. Dude is, according to reports, somewhat nuts in certain areas. I don't think I can elaborate. posted by wemayfreeze at 12:00 AM on November 29, 2007
I chuckled. Until I realized it was just a big Dr. Pepper ad. 15.01? That was about 4 months ago. posted by cashman at 6:37 AM on November 29, 2007
I find his deep, sonorous man-voice and semi-androgynous features strangely soothing.
In other news, I'm guessing that when James Earl Jones passes, Tay might be picking up a LOT of voiceover work (under his real name, since Tay Zonday is a pseudonym). posted by Unicorn on the cob at 9:00 AM on November 29, 2007 [1 favorite]
