jeffamaphone, you can also read this book if you're really interested, but it's a huge category that lots and lots of bands/styles/genres are thrown into, usually because of their attitude and the time they started.

There is a whole sub genre of post-punk for stamp collector groups as well, philatelic-punk. Also, I highly recommend "Rip it Up & Start Again" as mentioned above. The authors site has an excellent and extensive discography as well

It's missing a few groups here and there (and some classic tracks by the groups that are up) and there's odd choices - Sparks, no matter how awesome, are Glam surely? I don't know if Young Marble Giants are already old news to you guys, but I recently found out about them during the small round of media attention they got after the recent re-release of their one album and one-off reunion concert. It's awesome music. The live clips here don't show the half of it.

Oh, jebus, what a collection! The Church vids (some posted by Kilbey himself, it seems), Xymox, Shriekback (tkchrist nailed it), Stranglers, Flesh for Lulu (!), Skinny Puppy, Front 242, the Cult, Nitzer Ebb,early Ministry, the Cure, JAMC, hell - even the old Smiths, Pogues and Simple Minds vids. I think this list has just about every song I put on every mix tape I made for about a three-year period. What an amazing treasure-trove. This post makes me very, very happy. Out of curiosity, I used to have a tape with a song done by Nina Hagen and Lene Lovich together on it. Anyone have any idea what that might have been? I can't for the life of me remember the name of the song, but it was great.

Yes, Language Hat, why is there never any Essential Logic? Lora was in a film circa 1982 (before my conscious time) called "Crystal Gazing." Aside from that, I guess there just weren't any videos (and even some that are here are "new" videos by bands who didn't have any in their day.) Sad!

I got the vinyl and the CD without any problems at all when they were released. I made a custom Dalis Car t-shirt back in high school because I was, you know, so cool. BitterOldPunk, Pylon's been playing again lately, a couple times a year. They just played, or are about to play, a few shows up north. They are absolutely cathartic (still) and not to be missed. In case the author of that page reads all this, the Concrete Blonde Still In Hollywood link is broken.

Man, what a great band Shriekback was. Indeed. Splendid. Their quieter stuff too was so eerily beautiful -- they made a couple of my favorite albums of the 80s, at least in that segment of the great wheel of music.

The best birthday present I ever got was for my 30th birthday; about a month beforehand, my brother told me to pick a band I'd always wanted to see live but hadn't. I picked Joy Division. A month later, at my birthday party at a bar in Brooklyn, he and 3 of his friends, accomplished musicians all, performed a set as Joy Division. It was fucking awesome. Not the same, I know, but still...
