I had to mess with it before I could get it to read ad copy. Does anybody know of a free service like this that could actually be used as a screenreader? Trying to get it to read the spanish wikipedia to me, vozMe says Lo sentimos. El texto es demasiado largo. There is also IBM Text-to-Speech Research where their robot voices have a few different expressive intonations, but unfortunately their web demo is limited to 30 words.

When I was a teenager, I built a speech synthesiser around the old SP-AL-02 chip (or was it an SC-01?). Connected to the parallel port of my Microbee computer, the real trick was writing software to parse text input and convert each word to the correct phoneme sequence. My mother was very proud of the many hours I spent fine-tuning my text-to-speech code in order to get it to correctly pronounce "bullshit".
