I'm kind of curious as to how their habitats are threatened. Generally the reason gerbils, jirds, and jerboas are classified as 'least concern' for conservation status is that they live in places humans can't. Rocky arid plateaus and the desert are the usual ranges.

It immediaely reminded me of a wonderful poem called "The Jerboa" by Marianne Moore, which is nowhere easily accessible on the net. I spent a few minutes transcribing it, but now lack the HTML expertise to format it with its line breaks intact. (It's also fairly long, just under 200 lines.)

I do not in any wise intend to steal from the cuteness or the charisma. If these creatures need saving, then by all means let us save them. However, I must note that chincillas (which live in Chile) hop about in a very similar manner. I think it's related to that kind of physical structure (the big, thick back legs and long feet) and mode of ambulation (or whatever the word is for hopping about).
