The word "minority" to be banned in San Diego. (via Fark) That should take care of minority problems. Heck, and just when in California whites would have been the newest minority.

The headline's a bit disingenuous, as it's obviously bait to make people think the Language Police of San Diego will be monitoring casual usage and stungunning people who dare to utter the Dread Word.

But if a government agency wants to stop using the word "minority" in official documents, hey, whatever.

Must be a slow news day. ;)

I agree with solistrato. But perhaps we're in the minority.

Hoo-ha!

Actually, the tone of this piece, and the fact that it's suddenly made national news, is very reminiscent of the whole Ebonics flap. Race, language, California, hysterical recriminations sure to come from Bill O'Reilly, etc., and in the end it's all because a local agency decided to try something new.

Now, granted, I thought Ebonics was silly, but it did not merit the national outrage that it provoked. One of the oddest things about that - ahem - "controversy" was how "conservatives" who ostensibly believe in a clear separation between federal, state and local government were piling on a school district's policy that didn't affect them at all.

It's like - relax. This doesn't concern you.

I get the feeling that everyone on both sides of the political spectrum - and this may explain why a day doesn't go by without a Bush-bashing link here at MeFi, or why FreeRepublic.com has some hopping forums - are looking for that thing, that one thing that will completely validate THEIR viewpoint. Like David Horowitz's miraculous ability to bait dumb college students, and having him squeal with glee - "See? SEE? They're close-minded and they don't really believe in free speech and they need baths!!!" That was just embarrassing. Wonderful, you've proved an obvious point through race-baiting. Your intellect is truly formidable. Go away.

So I think these small news stories get blown way out of proportion because people are looking for THE example that the world is going to Hell in a handbasket and that they should listen to THEM because they have the plan. Such hobgoblins should be brushed away.

Well, that turned out longer than I expected.

I guess the MAJORITY of council members voted to remove the word MINORITY.

What happened to words are just words? I mean, the word minority is only a word. A word without any mean and does not mean any harm.

Slow news day... Hell yeah!!!

All minorities will henceforth be referred to as "little brown people." Those who fail to comply will be snuffed.

CATS'S LAW: As a MetaFilter discussion grows longer, the probability of a sentence of the form "All your X are belong to Y" appearing approaches 1.

Bracey02, how about you check out this thread and try making the 'only a word' argument again. ;)

Next week's headline:

Fisrt Amendment Bans Implementation of San Diego Rule

That's odd... I didn't realize the first amendment prohibited organizations (even cities) from deciding what sort of language they would use.

I'm moving to LA so that I can get some affirmative action benefits.
