I blame Asterix for the fact that, for many, many years, I misspelled asterisk.

There was no 'v' sound in classical times. I didn't realize this (despite the obvious clue that the V glyph was used instead of U) until I heard Randy Cohen pronounce caveat emptor as "cow-ee-ought emptor" in the last Ethicist.
