Interesting report, homunculus. The UNICIF report is fairly positive in that a good deal of progress is being made.

Those tables in the first link are disturbing: I knew that US infant mortality needed improvement, but I did not know that we are falling short also in education for primary grades. Don't we have a law that requires every child to attend at least elementary school? How can we only achieve 92% level?
