Alex Adventure and Space Barnacle are both freeware platformers that have small cult followings but have possibly been overlooked by a wider audience.

THE indie platformers with small cult following are, of course, Knytt and Knytt Stories. Unfortunately, also both Windows-only :(

Knytt's cult following is actually quite large compared to these two. I love all of them though.

Side-scrolling awesomeness. If we're talking freeware there must be mention of Ultima IV, the greatest game evar.

omg so many ultima IV memories. Killing Lord British by running away from him, then running amok on his throne... everyone did it at least once. Well aren't you a naughty Avatar! Because of course what distinguished Ultima IV was it was the first game that had a strong moral system and a disincentive to going on a rapacious rampage. Then again, I did that too, but only after I'd proved I knew the Eight Virtues and read the Codex of Infinite Wisdom. But of course Ultima IV isn't a platformer. Thanks for the links to these two, they look beautiful. I like Knytt, too, very meditative.

I didn't mean to imply that Ultima IV was a platformer (though hmmm... that might be more fun than these NeverWinter-Nights-based re-imaginings that people keep coming up with) just put it up because it's freeware now and to give the non-Windows brothers and sisters some love. And plus it's the greatest game ever.

Oh, how I love platformers. Why do these have to be Win. only? Also you gotta give some love to Doukutsu.
