I hit my head really hard during the seizure I was thrown into by the M.I.A. site. Whose pants are these?

More importantly, whose fish is this?

It's not that bad, at least 50% of the .gifs on that homepage are not animated.

Also, here's her video for Paper Planes, which was just released a couple weeks ago.

Dude. I totally saw her LIVE in Central Park, and my understanding of the attraction is still M.I.A.

Sweet merciful Jesus, the colors! The fucking colors are flashing and making me want to do bad things...

Like dance!

*dances*

I like M.I.A. but I can only listen to her in limited doses. Unlike her web page which I can't take any doses of at all.

Man, that song was on the radio this morning when my alarm went off and I had a dream that I was in the kabab shop around the corner and I ordered a döner for breakfast.

CRazy!

I love this song. It's one of the only M.I.A. songs on my ipod, and I listen to it way too much.

I have liquorice to blame--er, thank.

Hey, was that the beastie boys making a cameo at the end of the Paper Planes vid?

my understanding of the attraction is still M.I.A.

My understanding of MY OWN attraction is M.I.A. Maybe i just like her because William Gibson does.

Y'all know her dad is a high ranking Tamil Tiger? Think she mighta even been turned around at a US airport once. Look for tigers in her film clips.

Can't Wiki for the exact facts right now, but I have it on the authority of the Sri Lankan fella I used to sit next to at my previous job.

That's all discussed in the 1st "previously" thread, uncanny. Which you should probably check out, since it's so much better than this one.

Just joking, Artw. Really, she's been thoroughly discussed on the blue before, I just thought these videos were all too delightful together to resist sharing.

Hey, was that the beastie boys making a cameo at the end of the Paper Planes vid?

Yup.

I like MIA a lot, even if only in small doses. Paper Planes was the for sure jam on that last album, it deserved a better video

It's all true, as you can see on her Wiki Page if you want too. Although I'm not sure about the "tigers in video" bit, but I've only seen 'em on youtube, not known for high visual fidelity.

Maybe I was one of those discussing it??? Will check it out now.

In fact... metafilter.com was my introduction to MIA! She gets a reasonable amount of airplay in Oz - she's certainly not an underground artist.

I like how Sri Lankans look almost the same as Indians, but are shinier.

There's a tiger in the video for "Sunshowers"... I had a hankering to hear "Boyz" yesterday, and got sucked into her website. I, too, can only take her in limited doses, but once heard, her songs get inextricably stuck in my head.
(Never heard of her until I saw a link to "Galang" on Scott McCloud's website. Of all places.)

delmoi writes "It's all true, as you can see on her Wiki Page if you want too."

Well, the wiki page says that he was involved in another organization, the Eelam Revolutionary Organization of Students, which has been sporadically linked to the LTTE. I don't know if there's any evidence that he was ever personally involved in the LTTE itself, let alone as a "high ranking" member.

M.I.A is bubbles/wizard/dope/efn/good.

Personally, I can't get enough of A Plus D's mash of M.I.A. and INTERPOL: Mammoth Boys.

Plus I have always thought of M.I.A. as being my favorite member of Sterling's G7.

As much as I like M.I.A. and that song, I can't get past the fact that the video is Gondry-lite.

The only problem I have with that Paper Planes song is that is sounds like the background loop/sample is from an old Clash Song and it just makes me want to dig up my old Clash albums and listen to them again.

And sadly, the chinese dancers video is much better than the derived M.I.A. video. Mostly because I was induced into a mild flashback by the chinese dancers, while the M.I.A. video made me kind of nauseated. Strange.

That Paper Airplanes is mostly built on one of my favorite old Clash songs, about a half-breed vietnamese kid, right? "It ain't coca-cola - it's rice"...damn, so many layers of palimpsest and re-reference in there!

I get tired of her after more than a song or two, but I really love her up to that point, and continue to love the concept of here thereafter.

It also sounds like she may be expanding her sound a bit which should help. But damn, that Clash remix paper airplanes song is good! In an african chuckwagon with her metallica shirt on, yarra!

I kept hearing about her music and finally gave several songs a listen the other day. Generally awful stuff, except for Jimmy, which is passable. I don't get what the raves are for at all.

The woman in the original Bollywood video reminds me a lot of Penelope Cruz for some reason, even vocally.

MIA's Jimmy is simply marvellous...no questions.

MIA is so attractive. I think if I was designing a woman in a lab to be attractive to me and a genie was involved and I made this awesome girl and she was my idea of perfect and then M.I.A. winked at me I would dump the genie lab girl for her. And I would have to make do with just one vagina.

I was so ready to be angry at you EMRJKC, but then I realized how great that site actually is; also, how remarkably similar it is to M.I.A.'s.

You know, I was going to send some links of M.I.A.'s vids to a friend / colleague that works on music in Kerala, and then this FPP comes along. Thanks, hermy, for doing all my work for me! How did you find the original "inspiration" vids?
posted by LMGM at 6:31 PM on January 3, 2008

Yeah, Paper Planes alone makes me want to pick up her cd. Radical politics and a world beat? I think Joe Strummer would be very happy to see how his music was being used by her.

if you're gonna do the blink tag, as EastManitoba claims, you've got to go all the way like 60x1.com

Great song. "Kala" is deserving of all the end of the year acclaim it just got. "Arular" is pretty good too, though with somewhat less of the world music mash-up thing going on.
posted by hwestiii at 6:50 PM on January 3, 2008

If anyone wants mp3s of the disco track in the first link, or the Clash track sampled, look here.

Also, there was a pretty good re-working of Paper Planes with new vocals that got a lot of attention on music blogs a few months back by African (Malawi) singer, Esau Mwamwaya. The track is called Tengazako; I found it via Music For Robots - the mp3 there is dead now, but it's elsewhere on music blogs, or on Myspace. I was never too big a fan of MIA's vocals, so I think I actually prefer the African version to the original.

ESAU MWAMWAYA IS THE AFRICAN PHIL COLLINS!

I'm especially happy that I ain't got the fuckin foggiest what that means. Wow, that's really great, thanks, p3t3. MIA (and Joe Strummer) can't be anything but happy about that.

LMGM, a friend sent me the bollywood video this morning. The chinese dancers were featured on MeFi years ago, before everything was thoroughly YouTubized.

I'm a big fan of her "Kala" album, though it does have a few spots that I can't get into. The videos for Bird Flu and Boyz really built a bridge for me though in appreciating the album, and Paper Planes was one of the best new songs of the year, IMO.

I can totally see how the music would be obnoxious after a few songs, though it certainly helps if you are totally spliffed out and dancing your balls off.

Here's another truly awesome remix of "Paper Planes" featuring Bun B and Rich Boy. I actually prefer it to the original

I must say, the vid for paper planes totally re-arranged how I heard the sounds and lyrics of that song. In a good way, too.

Paper Planes has been my favorite song lately. Great stuff! Much as I like the M.I.A. video, I've got to say that the opening choreography of the second video is just friggin' awesome.

I'd like to officially petition for a "Not Safe for Epileptics" label for stuff like the M.I.A. homepage. Being epileptic, I prefer to know about this kind of thing in advance.

(Let's not talk about the friend of mine who sent me a link to "something funny" where "something funny" was seizure robots. He realized ten seconds later - which of course was ten seconds too late - that I was not the right demographic for that kind of hilarity. Ok, so, we did just talk about it.)
