Oh wow, I can't believe they covered "Spanish Dance Troupe" by Gorky's Zygotic Mynci! I love everything GZM have ever produced, but they aren't exactly the most well known of bands, so it's awesome to see that they have some fans in Of Montreal.

Excellent choice of Who, Kinks, Beatles and Velvets covers. Nice harmonies, and good singing on the high notes. These Canadian children have nothing to be ashamed of.

FYI the 3 I've tried so far are rather sketchy quality. I've DownedTheMall! and am working my way through the lot. The collection so far seems to be about 70/30 live recordings (with about half of those being 3rd party bootlegs)/studio work. flagged. as fantastic!

One summer day in 2006 fate smiled on me. I got a press pass to LA's Detour festival while trying to buy a ticket at the door, and it allowed me to hang out in the pit under the stage and get some quality pictures of Of Montreal. Also, they rocked it. Great post.

Let's go outback tonight... That commercial fills me with the rage. It'd be the one thing if they'd just licensed the song as is, but no—they had to change the lyrics too. Ugh. I was excited to see that Of Montreal covered Os Mutantes' Bat Macumba. It is too bad, however, that their version doesn't reproduce one of the main things that makes the song so great. The original lyrics create bat wings on the written page by removing a syllable at a time with each repetition so that the sentence roughly translated as "play those afro-brazilian religious drums to bring on spirit possession" morphs into "Batman" and then back again. It creates all these unexpected phrase lengths throughout the song.
