If you're not into cult classics, they've got a ton of other channels there, too.

All right, fine. I'll favorite this post. Jeez.

[This is crazy good, Dave Faris. Of course, you know that already, but still.]

Nice, downloading Rashoman now.

I had so many hopes to actually get any kind of work done this week. But nooo, you have to go and post a link like this. I'll go stock on power bars and chilled coffee drinks and only emerge back from this site 7 days from now.

Anyone else having trouble getting the plug in to load? The automatic install fals for me and when I try manual the plugin page on divx's site is not found.
posted by Mitheral at 7:24 AM on February 10, 2008

Am I wrong or those are mostly picked up from The Internet Archive?
posted by zouhair at 7:26 AM on February 10, 2008

You can copy the divx file to a CD or DVD. Then, if you sign up at divx.com, you can authorize your Divx-enabled DVD player so you can watch them on your TV.

Well, crap.
There goes my Sunday.

But seriously, thanks for a great find!

Oh my butts, that's great. Crossreferencing this with my old copy of Psychotronics = recipe for weirdo joy.

It seems like at least once a week MeFi comes up with a post that could keep me busy for 20 years or more. It's depressing.

Is Rashomon really public domain? I noticed that both it and the anime classic Akira are also available via Google video, yet Rashomon appeared to be yanked from The Internet Archive.

Seeing a (nother?) stage6 link here is a bad sign. TV-Links was dead within 6 months after it got posted to MeFi.

er, uhh, "Rashoman," sorry.

Their version of Murnau's Faust has the Euro-weeniest soundtrack ever appended to it.
posted by Bookhouse at 9:34 AM on February 10, 2008

Also, no English subtitles for the cards. But I learned that "hungersnot" is a word in German. And if you've never seen Faust, watch the first ten minutes. Murnau was an artist.

Nuh-uh, I remember it differently.

I feel like a peeping tom when I watch movies online, but sometimes, it's the only way to see certain movies.

Seconding Mitheral, does anyone know how to download the required plugin when Firefox's automatic download thingy fails?
posted by goatdog at 10:56 AM on February 10, 2008

From what I can see, all of stage6's .divx files are just renamed .AVI's, and will play without any authorization issues on standalones. Also, obviously, everything anyone would want to watch on stage6 is probably hosted there without the copyright-holder's permission.

Of course I meant French w/ Spanish subtitles. And I can learn both via Marker's gnomic alter-ego, using the English transcript of the text. Fantastic post, Dave Faris. Thanks

Anyone know how to download them all at once?

HOLY CHRIST

thankyouthankyouthankyou

Man, I still don't get this "cult" thing. More avant-garde movies should make it here. I don't want to start ripping movies.

You probably need to upgrade to the latest version of Firefox, cause it works fine on 2.0.0.12 for me. That said, you can download the plugin here.

I kiss you for this!

*.divx files are just .avis in drag. Firefox users should forget installing the plugin and use this greasemonkey script to get a link to the direct .divx file and then download that. There's plenty of good (but probably highly dodge-o) stuff on that site.

Thanks John Shaft. I had to edit the affected URL from stage6.divx.com -> stage6.com but it seems to be working now.

Yeah, but does Stage6 have The Day the Clown Cried?!
posted by NolanRyanHatesMatches at 8:03 PM on February 10, 2008

Oh man, it's got M, and Chaplin's The Kid, and White Zombie!

Damn it, you have totally ruined my ability to get anything else done this week.

Sweet! It's got music videos as well!
