I had never heard of this man, but now I'm captivated.

They may travel widely and get about in cities, but they will consciously choose to cloister themselves in some way--either in a secluded urban oasis or a geographically isolated area. Because they need space for the peculiar milieus they create for themselves, they live in a state of self-imposed exile, keeping the world at arm's length.

Does taking myself to NYC for a week and then holing up in a studio and never going out into the city count? I just finished doing exactly this, and feeling rather guilty about it. I'm so very pleased to know that there's a legitimate reason, nay, a social movement, explaining my actions. Cheers!

Well it's affected all right. I am once again surprised by the lengths people will go to justify their lack of celebrity. This just seems to me to try to make one feel better about not being overly exceptional at anything, relying instead on the jack-of-all-trades crutch. Using your curiosity about the world to claim league with the likes of Ben Franklin is weak sauce indeed. And on preview, highfive nas.

I've often thought that they transcended simple eccentricity, and that their behaviour may have actually been an unconscious coping mechanism for undiagnosed minor aspergers.

Or if that doesn't work, halve your dosage.

I just discovered his blog today, but I have been reading his comments for years on another LJ I frequent and I can tell you that he comes across as charming, intelligent, playful and kind. In other words, a perfect provincial. The kind of person you would like to be friends with (or what moxiedoll said). and I say this as someone who usually runs screaming from twee. My main problem with the guy is that he spends all his time defining what an affected provincial is, but it's clear that the answer comes down to "someone who has all the character traits I like to associate with myself and also has my taste in music and pizza toppings." I'm just not impressed or overwhelmed enough by his faux-18th century schtick to be able to get past that. I study the eighteenth century, and so I'm familiar with the people he's trying to imitate; he doesn't pull it off even remotely. Someone like Franklin or Dr. Johnson impresses you with his easy wit and cleverness, not the weight of affectation he can bring to bear. I get the sense that with this guy, it's always about himself and how he's coming off at any given moment. The fact that he seems to be aware of how affected and narcissistic he looks just doesn't mitigate it. Dr. Johnson had an ego the size of Greenland, but he still makes me want to go back in time and have a pot of ale with him. This guy? It just seems like he gets up every morning, puts on some vintage Brooks Brothers seersucker, and jerks off in front of the mirror.

I've had the pleasure of introducing Lord Whimsy at one of his book readings, and he is nothing if not approachable and kind. He has a certain aesthetic that he believes in, but as a writer and a person remains completely approachable and open. Wouldn't hurt a fly. Raises orchids. Good Lord, how can you not appreciate a quiet happy character like that?

nasreddin, methinks you take it all a bit too seriously. It's just a bit of post-modern humour centring on affectation not emulation. I don't even think it's a satire on the times as much as it's a leg pull on the author and the reader. The bottom line might be that some people are exposed and attracted to your precious Sternes and Johnson who may otherwise never have encountered them. Have 4 to 11 ales and a nap. All is well.
