Well worth a post, hermitosis, but... a bit mixed (not all pictures of Death), a bit random, a bit repetitive? I agree with proj that after you've seen 30 or so skeletons, the meh creeps in. The page is a bit like - hey, here's a ton of striking images, no context, no rationale, but your attention span wouldn't run to that anyway...

On the contrary, the barrage of imagery, however repetitive, really got me thinking about humans in those times and how arbitrary and sudden death must have been. Today we are spoiled with getting to know why and how more often than not, and so we feel entitled to see death coming. These people could see what we can't anymore-- that it is already here, always. And that this fact is tragic and horrible, but also humorous and tantalizingly mysterious, even erotic. Additional information would have been nice, but in my opinion the experience of confronting all these images produced its own immediate and visceral context. But maybe that's just because I'm a marked man...

It gets more interesting once you move on from the simple woodcuts into the more complex paintings. For example etc. and so on.

These are great, though it would have been nice to have more info on some of the images. Cornell's library also has a great collection of images, featuring a section on Danse Macabre, and there is quite a bit of overlap. The other images in collection are worth checking out as well.
