Yeah, I like Sonic Youth, but not 5 million dollars like them. Well the SY connection is kind of a blind, isn't it? The post (which isn't all that great) is really about the sale of a great painting by a stupendous contemporary artist. As much as I love it, though, I'd be more interested in owning one of the Baader-Meinhof series.

Somewhat related: Sonic Youth are preparing to launch an art show, which they hope will travel the world over a number of years, including a stop in New York. "We're putting together this museum show that's utilizing all the artists that we've worked with on different covers and concepts, and that's going to happen for two or three years," said Moore, after the band played "Kool Thing" at Jacobs's request. "It's going to happen in young museums, there's one outside of Paris, there's one in Malmö, Sweden," he added.

Why is it worth 5 million dollars? Because Gerhard Richter is probably the most collectable living artist. His stuff is incredibly hot right now, and showing no signs of cooling. There's nothing unusual about a Richter going for >$5m. The SY angle is more a curiosity than anything.

Sonic Youth's Daydream Nation scarcely troubled the charts when it was released in 1988 but has since been recognised as a rock masterpiece, regularly featuring in best album lists. This is all lies. This album cover is not one of the most famous in pop history. Daydream Nation has never troubled the charts. It was hailed as a "masterpiece" by "critics" as soon as it was released. Please stop trying to rewrite history

The piece itself (under the Kerze link) looks so much better than what appeared on the album jacket. On the jacket, they sliced off too much of that line that runs across the bottom of the painting, ruining the balance of the composition. Probably had to do that, of course, for the bleed that the printer needs. Anyway, now that I see the uncropped original, I must say I think it's a really fine painting, whereas I never really cared for that jacket. Balance is restored!

Save your money for when the original album artwork for Load comes on the market. Yeah, but Sonic Youth fans usually adore Daydream Nation. I thought most of the original hardcore Metallica fans view Load as when they sold out/jumped the shark. Then again, Lars Ulrich started collecting Jean-Michel Basquiat before it was cool.

mr_roboto linked to Gerhard Richter's painting "Betty" - which I saw at the Gerhard Richter show at SFMOMA. It is an amazing painting - it is of his daughter looking over her shoulder at one of Gerhard's abstract paintings. I also got the chance to see Sonic Youth perform Daydream Nation track for track in concert in Berkeley recently. The album still sounded great twenty years later.
